General Synth Questions

2006-01-18 by c10h14no2i

Can someone direct me to a more general synth discussion group? I
signed up for a couple of the yahoo groups discussions, and have been
awaiting activation for a week.
Ive got a few general questions. While Im waiting for my CGS kits to
get here, Im trying to decide what else I need to get my synth started.
I guess I will ask them here. If you dont want to take this forum too
off toppic, just direct me to somewhere that I might find help. Thanks!

My beginner questions are...

What is the difference between linear and expo VCA. I understand what
linear and exponential mean, but I can't imagine how that effects the
sound. Does it adjust more slowly at first, then quickly cut off
towards the end of the range? Why would I want that, instead of
relying on the EG to shape the sound.
I was looking somewhere, I think Blacet. He's got a dual linear, and
a quad expo vca's.

I have never used an analog clock source. Im guessing it is not the
same thing as DIN sync (that analog sequencers and drum machines use).
My MIDI-CV converter does DIN sync. How do I sync the analog clock
to my midi gear? If the analog clock is just a pulse of the clock
rate (like 2 pulses a second for 120 bpm) can I just play a note on
every beat and use the trigger out of my midi-cv as the clock?

And last...
Does anyone know of some good sources for VC LFO or EG kits or plans?
I don't think Im up for designing my own PCB off a schematic, but if
someone has the PCB layout made, I can print it and etch a PCB.

Sorry again for taking this off toppic. This is just the only place
Im getting any answers about anything.

thanks.

Exponetial VCAs respond different to the EG control voltage than a
linear VCA and yes, that is exactly what you want (or what i want
actually).
Exponential vca enable you to control the lower values more precise.
By experience you will find out that exponetial VCAs are rather
suitable for control voltages (i.e. feed LFO output into EG controlled
VCA to fade in the modulation), linear VCA are rather suitable for
audio signals. Hope that makes sense (I'm not a native speaker).

Thanks, I get it!
And, thanks for the patching idea! I would not have come up with that
on my own for quite a while.
I noticed that the "music from outerspace" website has a vca PCB for
sale. I think I will try one of those. Its got a switch to choose
between linear and expo. It may not be the same quality as the
Blacet, but it will sure save me some money! (and give me a little
more diy experience)
They also have an ADSR pcb for sale. I think that completes
everything I need that I couldn't find on Ken's site.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
