cgs22 master divider troubleshooting help

cgs22 master divider troubleshooting help

2009-12-12 by goodnessgrows

i recently built the cgs master divider, and am having trouble isolating a couple of problems (possibly one problem with two symptoms).

everything works fine, except: 2A stays at 5v, and 2C stays at 0v. the other "2" divisions work fine.

i swapped out the transistors related to those outputs, as well as swapping the 4070, no change. continuity has been checked from the output at the jack/led to the chips. the leds light/jacks work when plugged into other outputs.

i'd be appreciative of any suggestions for further investigation, and welcome the opportunity to learn from whatever mistake i might have made (or from the remote chance that a part may be defective).

thanks,
matthew

The fault would be with a bad connection between the 4070 (pin 8) and the
4024 (pin 12). Possibly a missing link, or a bad joint or break in the
track. The counter is working fine if all other outputs are behaving.

Thanks very much Ken.

There's continuity between the 4070 pin 8, and the 4024 pin 12, and I replaced the jumper that's in the path just to make sure it wasn't those joints.

There is also some anomalous behaviour in the div4 outputs. instead of being properly offset in phase, 3C & 2B go high/low together, and 3A & 2D go high/low together 180 degrees offset from 3C & 2B.

The div8 and div16 outputs appear to be working fine.

Thanks again,
Mattew

Check that pin 9 of the 4070 really does go to +ve. It may be floating.

Thanks again Ken. Pin 9 of all 4070s read 14.6v. I checked at the pin on the IC and on the solder side of the board.

it was a bad 4024, a new one fixed it. thanks for the help, it is much appreciated.
