Bit One MIDI upgrade?

Bit One MIDI upgrade?

2009-03-07 by crc1@rocketmail.com

heya crumar friends!

just bought me a broken bit one last week. it took me 3 days to repair, and now it seems to be fully functional and perfectly in tune. was alot work, but it seems that it was worth the effort!

i stumbled across some info that there is/was a midi upgrade, and it would add parameters 62-65 to it. i tried it out and noticed that my crumar had these. after small experimentation i figured out that parameter 65 is to select a midi channel and 64 is for omni mode on-off. what i would like to know is what to the parameters 62 and 63 stand for.

it also seems that you can not save these parameter changes, so you have to input them every time you turn your synth on. turning that omni mode off has made my bit one much more stabile when using through midi.

but anyone know about the parameters 62 and 63?

thanks!

-michael

ps. i just love the sound if this thing :)

Hi,

Thats great news!!! What was wrong with it? And how did you fix this?

And how do you access these extra parameters?

regards, Dennis

hey dender!

well it fas firstly totally out of tune, and that pitch knob on the back didn't help. secondly it drifted ALOT all the time.

i fixed the tune by detuning the oscilators direcly from the circuit board. quite time concuming but it worked. the drifting on the other hand was because of one ribbon cable connecting the upper left circuit board with the power unit.

one thing that i noticed it that when i detuned the oscilators..
if you want the mod wheel to work correctly for vibrato ect, you have to have the tuning pot in the back of the synth fully left. otherwise the mod wheel only "vibrates" in one direction.

there are quite a few screws on the circuitboard that affected many things. mainly pitch and filter ect. i might have to experiment some more.

if anyone knows where i could get a new ribbon cable (i think it only has 5 pins or so, i can take a photo!) let me know. it works for now but i did not replace the cable, i just bent it a bit and turned it back in upside down.

those extra parameters i accessed by pressing the address button, and just choosing value 65 for midi channel or 64 for omni on/off.
i don't know if this works in the older bit one models. i still would like to know what 63 and 62 do. both are "on/off" values (0 or 1)..

cheers

.michael

Re: [crumar] Bit One MIDI upgrade?

2009-03-07 by Michael Ashton

Hi Michael -- congratulations, you've certainly found a gem -- a real secret weapon.

I'm not aware that there was ever a MIDI upgrade to the Bit One, but perhaps there was a firmware revision. I've never seen a Bit that didn't have it, so it was probably early on.

I don't remember what parameters 62 and 63 do -- I thought 63 controlled MIDI channel, but it's been a long time since I used my Bit One, as it9;s been replaced by a Bit 01.

I do remember that these parameters are not saved between power-cycles, unfortunately. You'll find that the Bit One's MIDI implementation is very unstable generally -- that and the user interface are certainly the worst things about this otherwise brilliant synth.

i have tried to reply to you many times now, but it does not seem to work :P.. one more try..

> Thats great news!!! What was wrong with it? And how did you fix this?

it was totally out of tune and drifted ALOT.
i found alot of potentiometers and screws on the circuitboard that i experimented with. i also found out that the PITCH knob on the back of the synth should be turned fully to the left. othervise the mod wheel did not work correctly. i exprimented with tuning all those screws and i used a free guitar tuning vst called GTune. i can explain more later. i just don't want to write a long story again and press "send" just to see that my post disappears somewhere.

> And how do you access these extra parameters?

i just came across this "my synth had a midi upgrade that adds parameters 62-65" somewhere on the internet, and i tried it out and was happy to find that my bit one had those parameters too.

just press LOWER and after that ADDRESS and choose parameter 65 and choose a midichannel, or parameter 64 and choose 0 for omni-off and 1 for omni-on. like i said that you can not save that, so you have to do this every time you turn your synth on, but it's no big deal.

i don't know what bit one's have this so called midi upgrade. there is no info about this on the synth anywhere, and the manual tells that you can just use it in omni mode on and channel 1. better try and hope your bit one has this.

if someone knows what parameters 62 and 63 do, i'd be really happy. both are on/off style parameters, so just value 0 or 1.

cheers!

The bit 99 has patch change and pedal enable on the two addresses
below omni on/off and midi channel. Could be the same? Worth
a try...
