Baffles me

Baffles me

2006-06-29 by craigblurton

First of all, I am a complete novice at this and may be in the wrong
place to ask this question. If so, let me know and I'll try someplace
else.

I have a six-month-old iMac and a three-month-old Canon Pixma MP800.
I purchased Spyder2 Suite and calibrated my monitor without problem.
Spyder2 Suite comes with PrintFix Plus, not Pro, and I think the idea
is that instead of actually calibrating your printer you use
approximations based on "ICCs" provided by Colorvision in the software.

From the documentation: "Users will typically select the PrintFIX PLUS
target choice that most closely matches their printer, ink, and paper
combination, and use the media type setting associated with it."

So, for instance, you pick an ICC like "Epson Model XYZ" used with
"Really Really Glossy No. 888" and that sets your color. Is that right??

Anyway, that would be great except that they do not provide an "ICC"
for my printer. I contacted the local (Hong Kong) dealer about this
and he basically told me to just experiment with those ICCs provided
in the software. Since you must print multiple examples to check each
result for each paper you use, this would be very expensive and time
consuming which I pointed out to him. No answer since, so I went to
the Web site and looked but couldn't really find any information to
help me.

What can I do now? Do I need to buy PrintFix Pro? I'm not doing this
as a professional printer so I don't want to spend a fortune. I just
want my prints to look somewhat like my screen, or vice versa.

Thank you,

Craig

Craig, PrintFix Pro certainly will do what you're wanting to do, and the
price is great compared to some of the high-end color management packages.

You might also check into having a profile made by a service. They range
from $50 to $100, and you basically print their target file and send them
the print(s). They generate a profile and email or mail it to you. Maybe
some others here can recommend a good place to have this done.

If you took the time, you would probably find a 'close' profile as another
printer model, but it might take a bit of ink, time, and there's no
guarantee that another profile will work with your printer.

What printer do you have?

Craig,

A new release of PrintFIX PRO and PLUS software, version 1.1.1, should
be appearing on the ColorVision web site within the next few days,
possibly as early as tomorrow. The set of pre-measured PLUS targets has
been greatly expanded. We'll post a more detailed note about this here on
the list as soon as the installers have been moved to the web servers.

Hi Chris:

Thanks for the information. Do you have a URL for the services that
provide profiles? Do you need just one or one for every paper you
use? The printer I'm using is a Canon Pixma MP800. I bought it about
2-3 months ago.

Thank you,

Craig

Hi David:

Thanks for the information. I'll keep my eye on the Website for the
updates. I hope the update of PrintFIX Plus includes the Canon Pixma
MP800 printer!

I think these people will for $25.00 if you buy some paper from them.

PrintFIX PRO and PLUS 1.1.1 Installers are now available

2006-06-29 by David Miller

Hi everyone:

We've just released the 1.1.1 software versions, and you can download
them from the ColorVision US web site here:

http://www.colorvision.com/sup_dl-upgrades.shtml

Note that there are 4 installers here: PRO for both platforms; and PLUS
for both platforms.

Download and run the installer that is appropriate for your installation,
and use your current PRO or PLUS serial number when you launch version 1.1.1
for the first time. PRO users: make a backup copy of your existing measurement
files before running the installer, just to be safe (they are in the :Data:PRO
folder).

We'll post a complete list of update notes later in the day. The main changes
here are:

- Expanded list of PLUS targets

- No more stability issues with Windows printer drivers (this affected a
small number of users with HP printers)

- New Info command shows details about measurement files. Read-only for
PLUS users. PRO users can edit certain details and resave, either over the
existing measurement file or into a new measurement file.

The installers are very large (150+ megabytes)... Maybe everyone is
trying to get them at once...:-)

Alternate site: ColorVision Europe, maybe it will go faster?

We have not yet moved to our new servers, so it is indeed slow, but it
is also large, since its now nine languages...

Hi David et. al.:

Now I know I am truly out of my depth. I got the following email from
David's company this morning (Hong Kong time):

-----------------------------------
It looks like the Canon Pixma is a CMYK printer if that is so, then
PrintFIX Pro will not support it. Unless, the Canon comes with RGB
drivers.

Thank you,

Elana Leventhal
ColorVision US Customer Support

-----------------------------------

So, it would appear that I cannot use PrintFIX Plus to get my printer
and my monitor in closer color agreement. I have no idea what the
difference is between a "CMYK" and a "RGB" printer but I damn sure
would have bought an RGB printer if I knew I wasn't going to be able
to get color matching prints from this set-up! Too late now. It is a
brand new printer and I cannot afford to buy another one.

If anyone knows of anything else I can do to solve this problem aside
from making adjustments for each print I make by trial and error,
printing it, then making more adjustments, etc. etc. I would be very
appreciative to hear it.

Thanks,

Craig

Hi David et. al.:

Thank you,

Elana Leventhal
ColorVision US Customer Support
http://www.colorvision.com
1-800-554-8688
-----------------------------------

So, it would appear that I cannot use PrintFIX Plus to get my printer
and my monitor in closer color agreement. I have no idea what the
difference is between a "CMYK" and a "RGB" printer but I damn sure
would have bought an RGB printer if I knew I wasn't going to be able
to get color matching prints from this set-up! Too late now. It is a
brand new printer and I cannot afford to buy another one.

To set the record straight:

What you have is an "RGB" printer, because you are printing to it through
an RGB workflow via Photoshop and a standard Canon printer driver; not through
a 3rd party RIP.

So disregard all of that. Your printer is fine.

If anyone knows of anything else I can do to solve this problem aside
from making adjustments for each print I make by trial and error,
printing it, then making more adjustments, etc. etc. I would be very
appreciative to hear it.

What you do with PrintFIX Plus is find the set of measurements, from
the existing set, that are closest to what you are trying to build a profile
for; build a profile with sliders set to 0; do a test print through the profile;
and then go through several iterations to tune printed results, building a
profile and doing another test print. Compare your test print to your
(already calibrated) display and adjust until they match as closely as possible.

Ideally, there would be a set of measurements included with PLUS that
would cover every possible variation of manufacturer, printer model, paper,
and ink, so that the starting point would be as close as possible to your
exact printer. In practice, that still isn't the case. We've expanded the
list of measured targets in the 1.1.1 software, but it doesn't cover every
Canon model manufactured, past and present. We will continue to add
new target measurements to the list as time goes on so that there will be an
ever-expanding series of "starting points", but for the moment: if you don't
see your printer specifically listed, you need to start with what seems like
the closest equivalent from the listed target measurements and proceed with
slider iterations after that.

You don't need to do this for each print that you will eventually make; once
you've arrived at a good profile, you won't typically rebuild the profile
with other variations for individual prints.

Dear David:

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. I am happy to know
that I can use PrintFIX Plus with my printer. Your explanation about
how to use it is very clear. I will give it a go and see what I can do
to bring my equipment into closer agreement. I may be back with more
questions, such as how do I get my office set-up, which is an exact
duplicate of my home set-up (new iMac and Canon MP800), to be in
agreement!

Thanks again. I hope your boss is aware of the great customer service
you provide in this forum.

Best wishes,

Craig
