Baffles me

First of all, I am a complete novice at this and may be in the wrong place to ask this question. If so, let me know and I'll try someplace else. I have a six-month-old iMac and a three-month-old Canon Pixma MP800. I purchased Spyder2 Suite and calibrated my monitor without problem. Spyder2 Suite comes with PrintFix Plus, not Pro, and I think the idea is that instead of actually calibrating your printer you use approximations based on "ICCs" provided by Colorvision in the software. From the documentation: "Users will typically select the PrintFIX PLUS target choice that most closely matches their printer, ink, and paper combination, and use the media type setting associated with it." So, for instance, you pick an ICC like "Epson Model XYZ" used with "Really Really Glossy No. 888" and that sets your color. Is that right?? Anyway, that would be great except that they do not provide an "ICC" for my printer. I contacted the local (Hong Kong) dealer about this and he basically told me to just experiment with those ICCs provided in the software. Since you must print multiple examples to check each result for each paper you use, this would be very expensive and time consuming which I pointed out to him. No answer since, so I went to the Web site and looked but couldn't really find any information to help me. What can I do now? Do I need to buy PrintFix Pro? I'm not doing this as a professional printer so I don't want to spend a fortune. I just want my prints to look somewhat like my screen, or vice versa. Thank you, Craig
