Which Spyder?

Which Spyder?

2007-06-28 by Gary

Hi there! I'm interested in getting a Spyder calibration tool but I'm
confused about the differences between the models... Can anyone clue
me in to what's what? I don't do any printing at home and I use both a
CRT and LCD monitor on two different computers, if that makes any
difference as to which model I should choose. Any help in
understanding the differences would be appreciated. Thanks!

It probably depends on how critical you want to be. I would recommend
starting with the Suite. It has more choices than the Express, although you
will have to manually set up the calibration. The Express, apparently, will
do the work for you, but has limited options for items such as gamma and
color temperature. I use the Pro which includes ambient light measurements
and custom curve options. You can upgrade, for a price, from any version to
the next. Here is their page for comparisons:

I've used Colorvision since it was introduced. The first version was really
rough and had some problems but the product they are now producing
>>cannot<< be beat for the cost. Their paper profile system is also
excellent in case you ever do get into printing........

They are all the same Spyder, its just more advanced software, with more
options and features, in the higher priced versions. If you need to calibrate a
digital projector, or tune the matching of side by side monitors, then
Spyder2PRO is needed. If you just want to chose from the more common gamma and
whitepoint options, then Spyder2 will do the trick. If you want push button
calibration with no options on a single monitor per computer, to the most common
standard, than Spyder2express will suffice.

Thanks for the help! I don't think I need the Pro but I don't know if
I'd like the Express since it only has the automatic mode. I like to
have a bit more control than that... Also, don't get me wrong on the
printing. What I meant was, I don't print at home, I do like to take
the photos on a storage card and have them printed at a kiosk. That's
a big part of why I want a color calibration tool, so that I can see
exactly how they "should" come out when printed after editing. Will
the Spyder 2 Suite be sufficient for printing that way?

Thanks.

If the lab or other outsource printing option is color managed (meaning it reads the ICC profile tagged to your images, and converts to an accurate profile for its output) then yes, just calibrating your monitor and tagging your files (or having them in the expected space for the lab) wil do the trick. If its not color managed, then there isn't really anything you can do but grumble, and possibly find another source of prints. For the 99 percent of users that also have at least one color printer of their own, profiling that is also part of the equation for full color control.
