Test Print problem PrintFix Pro

Test Print problem PrintFix Pro

2007-09-29 by digibud99

I have an ipf5100 on order and plan on using a variety of papers so I
bought PrintFix Pro to generate some initial profiles. As part of the
process for creating a profile you print a test quadrant. I am using
an Epson2200 and the test prints have a sickly greenish tinge as if
they are double color managed. I am selecting the correct paper type
in the Epson driver and I am setting the driver to No Color
Management. My monitor is well calibrated using a Monaco spyder. My
normal prints are pretty darned good when printing from Photoshop and
using the Epson profile; I'm just trying to get a handle on the
PrintFix Profile software. Since No Color Management is chosen in the
Epson driver and there are no other selection options within the
PrintFix program, I'm at a loss as two what may be causing this
apparent problem. Any guesses? (I have sent a msg to the folks at
PrintFix Pro but sometimes those kinds of replies take days). I'm on a
Mac Pro FWIW. I can't imagine Photoshop (which remains open at all
times on my machine) can be influencing the printer but something is
causing the printer to do this.
I signed up for yahoo groups for this but won't ever be
checking the yahoo email address.

I'm assuming you're talking about the media setting quadrant. If so don't worry about color.
Look for the distinction in the squares especially the corners and so forth. What you are
looking for at that point is how much ink to lay down and that will differ from printer to
printer, paper to paper and media setting to media setting. Your test targets may show a
color cast as well and that is what your profile will be built from. i.e. your computer asked
for this color and your printer printed that color so the profile will correct for that by doing
this...

Sorry, a quick addendum. Make sure you've done a head alignment and nozzle check first to
eliminate those possibilities.

I asssume you mean the Print Preview at the end, which prints through your newly created profile...

They are certainly "single color managed" by the application. As long as you are turning of color management in the driver, you should be fine on that count...

Management. My monitor is well calibrated using a Monaco spyder.

The monitor will have no effect, when printing a standard test image...

Then there shouldn't be anything wrong with the printer...

Nothing stands out from your description as being wrong. You would need to send me a copy of the XML measurement file you are building your "green" profile from for me to be able to comment further. This will be "double color managed" in a different sense, since you have written both to this list, and to tech support...

This also came up in the same question directed in the Colorvision
support ticket system, so the answer (to post it here as well) is:

Media Setting Check is intended as a test to see whether driver media
settings are putting down acceptable amounts of ink (not too much;
not too little) when color management in the driver is turned OFF.

It is NOT intended as a test of profiling and

PrintFIX PRO doesn't apply a profile when printing the Media Setting
Check image; you're supposed to print the Media Setting Check image
with color management turned off; it's supposed to come out non-color-managed,
which is exactly what you're seeing.

The problem here is that you're using the feature correctly, but thinking
that you're supposed to be getting a color managed print, when in fact this
step (if you use it at all - it's optional) comes before you ever print
a target, take measurements, or build a profile.

David was wrong....because there was very little right I was doing here. In my shallow
defense I'll mention I have three wedding sets I'm working on during the day then from 8PM
to 2 or 3 AM I've been out shooting Northern Lights. Add to that a good dose of carelessness
and I made several mistakes in attempting to create a proper profile. I -think- I have a
reasonably good profile at this point and after it gets somewhat light out I'm going to view a
few prints in daylight. What I DO want to take a moment to do here publically, is to thank
David for his help. Over the course of several emails he has been over-the-top in his prompt
attempts to help me resolve my problems in spite of my mistakes. His help has been much
appreciated. My hat's off to PrintFix and David for their excellent support. Thanks.
