PrintFix Pro: how to print a target from Photoshop CS instead of PFP?

PrintFix Pro: how to print a target from Photoshop CS instead of PFP?

2007-12-02 by David

I just bought and downloaded PrintFix Pro and I'm having trouble understanding how to turn off color management when printing a target from this program.

Instead I printed a target from Photoshop CS, using these settings:

When I first opened the TIF file in Photoshop, it asked me to select a missing color space; I selected "leave as is (don't color manage)"

I then select "Print with Preview" and in the Print Space menu, I selected "Same as source"

Then in the my Epson R2400 printer menu, for color management, I selected ICM, then Off (no color adjustment) and also selected the paper tray, media type and print quality settings.

Is this the proper way to print my target from Photoshop? I've done it this way before when I've paid someone for a profile and had to send them a target.

Best, David.

You have the proper settings to print targets out of Photoshop!

That will do it, as long as you still set your driver settings as you
plan to use them later, when printing through the profile, and still
turn off driver color managment. The rest is done for you when printing
targets directly from PFP or S3Print. But the first description, for
using the targets in Photoshop, was correct as well...

That's correct.
I then select "Print with Preview" and in the Print Space menu, I selected "Same as source"

That's also correct. (In CS3, that setting is labelled differently, but
doing it that way in the older CS is right).

Then in the my Epson R2400 printer menu, for color management, I selected ICM, then Off (no color adjustment) and also selected the paper tray, media type and print quality settings.

That's all correct, good!
Is this the proper way to print my target from Photoshop? I've done it this way before when I've paid someone for a profile and had to send them a target.

Perfect; you should get a nice, dark, target print that way.

Thanks all.

I also went back and also printed the target from within PFP, and the
colors were the same, as far as I can tell, so I'll assume this is the
correct way of printing targets from within PS.

I then went and read the target and created a profile, but when I made
a print, the results were way off: the print was quite a bit darker
than on my monitor (which is often the case and to be expected
somewhat) and the colors seemed off, overly green and blue. I made
another print after making it lighter, and the results are better, but
I think I'll have to work a bit more at this to get the results I'm
after.

I'll also upgrade to SpyderPrint3 and follow some of the suggestions
from Colorvision on making profiles.

Best, David

You made a print of the target with the profile or a real image?

Use a real image if so...the test image in the PFP folder is a good one to check the profile.

I made the target print from the target file, then printed one of my own images to see how it worked? As I said, I may have to work a bit to get this system down.

You can cut out a number of variables (color settings in Photoshop,
color space in Photoshop, color managed printing out of Photoshop,
gamut and quirks of your personal image, etc) and get a result with
some meaning to others by printing the standard test images that come
in PrintFIX PRO or Spyder3Print directly from PFP or S3P... that makes
it a bit clearer if your issue is the profile, or something else.
