soft proof, but not print, has a magenta cast

soft proof, but not print, has a magenta cast

2007-12-04 by janoslanyi

I have a softproofing problem that I think was diagnosed correctly on another forum, and
would appreciate help here in solving it.

I made color profiles for several papers from OS 10.4 and CS2, and the prints are great - they
correspond exactly to the color and tone of the image I have on the monitor in Adobe RGB.
The problem is that the soft proof (not the prints) using the profiles has a magenta cast. It is
present for color and black and white both, and for perceptual and relative colorimetric intent
both. I can correct it with a 10% green filter when I check for other problems if any, but have
to remove the filter before printing.

It seems that while the color table in the profile sent to the printer is fine and quite accurate,
the second color table that is used for soft proofing is not. With PrintFixPro v2 I can edit
either the first table or both tables, but I found no way to edit just the second. Am I missing
something?

Did you use slider adjustments when you built the profiles?

If so: if you have the "Show Edits in Preview" box checked in the "Build"
controls, then the slider adjustments will show up in your softproof.
You can prevent this from happening by unchecking the "Show Edits" box
before you build. (The printing part of your profile will be the same,
so the prints you make through it won't change; this affects only the
"preview" part of the profile).

Thanks for the reply. No, I did not edit the profile at all, as it is perfect (for the prints at
least). I understand what you suggest, and realize now that I should have written this fact
in my posting.

Furthermore, the same magenta cast in the soft proof is present for two different profiles
(for Museo Silver Rag and Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl), even though neither needed any
adjustment with sliders.

    best regards, Janos

Can you send me a copy of your measurements file? Just use the File:Open
Data command to open the folder containing the measurement files;
email it to me directly at davem@...
