White Luminace vs Colorimeter CIE xyY Y value

White Luminace vs Colorimeter CIE xyY Y value

2008-01-10 by tech4x5

I am using Spyder 2 Pro 2.2. What is the difference between/relation
between White Luminance and the Y value I get when I calibrate with the
Colorimeter CIE xyY? Thanks.

Cap Y is the current White Lumiance, and should match what is shown in the Info window for Cap Y. If it doesn't match you may be measuring in the uncalibrated state/calibrated state, thus causing the difference.

Thanks for the reply. If I desire to lower the Y value (White
Luminance), is the best way to do this with the Contrast control on
the front of the LCD moniter?

Thanks, Matthew Kraus

If you have a display that offers a contrast control (rare in this day of control-less LCDs) then yes, check the box saying you have a contrast control, choose Measured Mode, define a white luminance thats lower than the native white, and the software will prompt you to make the adjustment during running the application to your target white luminance, using the contrast control. Its always best to adjust via hardware controls, if they are available.

Re: White Luminace vs Colorimeter CIE xyY Y value

Sorry. Still am befuddled.
I reset moniter to factory default values which are Contrast 65 and
Brightness 100. I open software and get a Colorimeter reading of 163
as a baseline. I then use WP 6500 and Gamma 2.2 I select Measured
Mode and set White Luminance at 125. I continue and it asks me to
select the controls I have. I have a Samsung Synchmaster 214T which
has Brightness and Contrast controls on the front menu. I only
select and check the Contrast box. It now opens Set White Luminance
Screen. It asks me to set the White Luminance. I assume I do not do
this by looking at the 4 white boxes, but reopen the Colorimeter to
get numerical value. But
.before I touch any of the controls, I
remeasure with the colorimeter and the value is now 218, not 163!
This changed after I selected the contrast box. I don't know what
happened or what to do now. I was planning on lowering the WL value
from 163 to 125, but now it meaures 217 before I even touch it. I
don't know where to set it for. I'm really confused. Can you help
me understand this? I'm obviously making some errors here. Thanks.
