PC to Mac

2008-06-02 by joaniesanchirico

I just got a mac book pro. Have been using PrintFix Pro on my PC and have lots of profiles
made.

Have a couple of questions:
1. How do I get the program loaded on my Mac? or should I?

I never upgraded when the updates came out in October. I thought I'd be getting the new
computer right away (took a bit longer than expected) so I didn't want to play around until
I switched. I do remember that you had to uninstall the original version first before
upgrading. So I need the most recent version then.

2. Will my print profiles still work or do I have to redo them?

I'm finding out that this migration isn't as painless as I was lead to believe it would be! But
I got tired of Photoshop crashing my pc all the time and needed more memory and hard
drive space anyway. It's just taking longer than expected to get everything set up the way I
need it.

3. Right now I'm using the mac book pro screen, can you calibrate that or should I? I did a
test print on my Epson 7800 and the color is obviously way off.

Thanks!

Definately load it on your Mac. Download the latest Spyder3 print Mac version from our website, and install it with the same serial number you used for Windows.

Won't be an issue with a new Mac, just find your serial number on the original software sleeve before starting.

2. Will my print profiles still work or do I have to redo them?

That depends on whether the Mac printer driver for your printer prints identically to the Windows printer driver. If so, you can copy your profiles to your Mac's ColorSync folder, and off you go. If not, you need to build new profiles for each paper. But Spyder3Print v3.5 Public Beta, now on the website, will at least make this process faster, and less effort, than the last time around.

I'm finding out that this migration isn't as painless as I was lead to believe it would be!

No matter what system you are used to, a change is a change. But I find that users who add a Mac to their mix end up migrating most if not all of their work to the Mac once they have gotten used to it. So give yourself some time.

But

That would be true even if you had bought a new Vista machine...

Definately profile your MacBookPro screen... as well as your 7800!

I will let CD and others respond in detail; but I would suggest that you
probably do need to calibrate and profile your monitor display on the Mac at
minimum. If you changed printers, papers, or inks when you changed
computers, your old profiles might not work the same as they did before.
Moreover, the change from PC printer drivers to Mac printer drivers might
alter the color characteristics of the print and/or printer such that new
profiles would be needed.

MacBook LED

2008-06-02 by MarkGodfrey

I'm seeking advice for profiling a MacBook Pro 17 matte LED backlit
display -- Go native -- Or 6500 White point, 2.2 Gamma & 120ish
luminance . . . or ?

Thanks, Mark Godfrey

If the native whitepoint offers a white that is a reasonable match to
whatever you are matching, under whatever light you are matching it, then its fine,
and simplifies the process. If not, then 6500 is the most obvious choice,
though something a bit less blue, such as 5800, may be appropriate depending on
your conditions. 120 luminance is great if you are working under dim light,
with other desktop LCD displays also at 120 candelas... if you are using it under
uncontrolled lighting (in other words, as an actual portable, not a portable
forever in a dark studio), I'd run it brighter. And yes, no real reason to
vary from 2.2 on the gamma. The ambient light wizard in Spyder3Elite is the best
way to determine optimal settings for a given environment.

Re: PC to Mac

Sorry! tried to thank everyone for their help and wound up sending my own message back. I'll work on this and let you know how it goes.

I do love this new Mac, and when all is transferred, I know I'll be much happier!
