Spyder3Pro and Windows 7 Beta 7000

Spyder3Pro and Windows 7 Beta 7000

2009-01-15 by sid_phillips55

I know that Win7 is totally unsupported, which the Datacolor reps in
Switzerland tactfully reminded me about. However, for the moment
let's assume I am running Vista64 and approach the problem from that
direction. I am trying to install v3.0.7

When I install the Spyder3Pro software it loads all the languages and
takes forever. Happens even if I install it with Vista or XP
compatibility turned on. Once finished the program launches and runs
correctly - but it cannot use the driver for the colorimeter. It says
it cannot recognize the driver signature.

It's almost running. If I can just figure out how to get the OS to
recognize the driver we'd be in great shape, I believe. If this were
Vista64, what would you recommend as possible workarounds? Thanks!

I would recommend using Vista64. Thats supported, and works. We'll get to Windows 7 between now and when its released.

The vista drivers should work with Windows 7; according to the folks at
Microsoft, most Windows 7 drivers will be similar to those used by Vista
such that if you cannot find a Windows 7 driver you should try a Vista
driver. Of course, this does not mean that as Windows 7 gets its finishing
touches something might happen to screw this up. However, Windows 7,
despite just going into public beta release, is close to finalization.
There have been some Windows 7 64 bit editions that have encountered
installation problems when installed as an upgrade versus a clean install
where they get close to completing the installation and then stop the
installation process rolling back to the previous Vista version.
Nevertheless if you got Windows 7 installed and there are 64 bit drivers
available for the device in Vista, they should work in Windows 7.

David:

I'm just testing Win7, I am not relying on it as my primary OS. I
wasn't looking for a solution from Datacolor, just some suggestions
of what I might do if this were Vista64 with the same problem. Based
on that, I might be able to develop a workaround for my system which,
in turn could help other beta testers.

The sooner we can get apps running under Win7 - even with
workarounds - the sooner Windows users will embrace *those* products
because they know they will work. Our feedback and our success is
just as important for the app developers as it is for Microsoft.

I've been using Datacolor products and advocating them for a decade
(or longer). You really shouldn't be treating long-standing customers
with such a cavalier attitude. At least the team in Switzerland were
civil in their reply. If you don't want to suggest possible
workarounds that's fine. Just be gracious about it.

___
Attitude can be difficult to perceive in email. I was not being sarcastic, but stating our policy, and my recommendations. 32 bit installs appear to be working, but I don't expect that will assist you much with your Win7-64 situation. We are also looking into giving users more control over what language they install in future installers, which might possibly have some bearing.
