Can somebody definitively answer the following question. 

I am getting different answers from different people.

When projecting images through a projector onto the screen does the
projector need to be calibrated to the screen, or only the laptop
driving the projector?

For the record my intuition suggests the projector should be
calibrated to the screen for accurate colour, but colleagues tell me
calibration the laptop is sufficient.

Your intuition is correct. Your colleagues are wrong.

The recommended method is pointing the calibrator at the screen, which factors the screen into the calibration. But you'll get most of the value of the process aiming the calibrator at the projector, with will not factor in the screen. The laptop has less to do with it, though that's where the calibration data and profile will end up stored. Particularly with Mac laptops, you can hand the profile on to other laptops and still get good results.
