Base for Spyder 3 Reader - how does this thing go together?

Base for Spyder 3 Reader - how does this thing go together?

2011-10-03 by grandpollo

I have the 3 sensor set up to monitor ambient light.

It fell off where it sat last night, maybe 6 inches and the two parts of the base that create a slot for the sensor are mow apart.

Looking at it, I can't see how it ever could have fit together as follows.

The base has the rounded, heavy bottom, from which protrudes, gravestone style a vertical plastic piece with a curved slot.

The companion piece now loose, is curved concave at the bottom the fit the base and has a larger curved slot. The idea is the loose piece fastens to the base gravestone piece creating a gap for the sensor to slide into.

This appears to be impossible as one piece has large holes and the other small holes and holes to holes won't connect of course. Are there small pins wide at one end and small at the other that in this small 6" drop not only have gotten loose but have actually vanished?

I could glue the loose piece to the base I suppose but what gets me is that is was OK prior to the great plunge and upon examination I can't see how it ever worked at all before , making me believe in magic.

No, there was a gap in time where the factory failed to glue the front sections onto the base, and there were shipped with only friction fit. Gluing yours back in place would provide the step that should have been provided at the factory...

This makes me long for the days of customer service of old, when a vendor would say, the factory made a bunch wrong, risking damage to your $200 piece of equipment, so please send us your address and we'll mail you one made properly.

Vs. Glue it yourself, buddy.

Given that the vast majority of the items have had no problem, and its easy to just pop it back on yourself, its hard to justify a recall. Adding a bit of adhesive will make the more engineering oriented customers feel they are doing a more permanent job, but its not really necessary.

That's the oint. It doesn't pop back at all. The free piece has two small holes at the bottom. The fixed piece has two larger holes. Holes don't pop into holes.

Looking at it I have no idea how it stayed together at all which made me ask if there is a missing piece intended to join the two parts, that would have large pins on one side and small on the other.

I used black electrical tape to fasten the two halves but I am sure there's a part missing.

If so, we will certainly replace it. When I look inside one, I see large holes in the back (attached to the base) and small pins (with holes inside them, to minimize shrinkage in cooling) that fit inside the larger holes. Sounds like you may have sheared the small pins off, or it would not have stayed together previously. Send me a photo of the two pieces (an iPhone photo would be fine) to CDTobie@..., and I'll see what component we need to send you.
