Spyder 3 Utility Prefs questions

Spyder 3 Utility Prefs questions

2012-10-31 by tlbepson

I have had a new Win7/64bit system built and have finally reached the point of installing the Spyder3Elite driver--why I had to pay $19 for the driver is a mystery (and annoyance) to me but I digress...

In the Spyder3 Utility Preferences in the "Video Card" section, the "Load Video Card Lookup Table (LUT) Every" option has "Never", "1 Minute", "5 Minutes", "10 Minutes", "30 Minutes" and "60 Minutes" and I've chosen the "Never" option but I don't know if that's correct. My guess is that on some systems the LUT is unloaded for some reason and this setting allows the LUT to be reloaded sort of automagically without having to reboot.

Is there info/documentation on when/how this unloading might occur? Is there something in the Spyder3 Utility icon that would display that the LUT has been unloaded--changes color or something?

Is "Never" a reasonable choice on a Win7/64bit system--using an Asus PA248Q monitor via NVIDIA Quadro 600 video card.

Thanks!

You weren't paying for the driver, you were paying for an upgrade to a newer version of the software, with more features. You could have downloaded the older version for free, but what you have is an improvement.

It's a matter of other software flashing the LUTs. This was particularly problematic under Vista. If you don't have any issues, then never is fine.

Unfortunately we don't know what other software is doing, and it's actually simpler to reload it, then to check it.

If it works for you, it's fine.

Thanks so much for the clarification. I basically just downloaded the most current version and was very confused by the entire new serial number/activation process--it had been a very (very!) long time since I'd updated anything on my Spyder3 since my old system has been quite shakey and I didn't want to tempt fate by adding anything new and things were working ok with what I had.

On first opening the software after installation on my new Win7 system I selected the "Yes" button (to the last update year) and ended up on http://spyder.datacolor.com/portfolio-view/spyder4elite/ which was confusing. I posted a support query and then decided to see what would happen if I chose the "No" button which took me to a more useful page that allowed me to do the purchase although there was no way to log into my existing Datacolor account so while I completed the purchase process and received my new serial number (and later successfully completed the activation process), I'm not sure the purchase has been registered within my existing Datacolor account.

I think, perhhaps, that adding a note on the Datacolor download page that there is a charge for version 4.0.2 would be helpful but perhaps I missed that note somewhere?

Ahhh...ok...

I guess my question is...how would I know if the Spyder3 LUT-set has been mucked with? Does the Spyder3 Utility icon in the Notifications area change color or flash or something if the LUT has been changed after its been set by the Spyder3 when I start my system?

Thanks!

Color would be wrong on your screen. If you let the Utility correct it periodically, you won't have to worry about that.

One more question...

If the Spyder3 LUT load has been mucked with by some other software so that it is no longer loaded would the Spyder3 Utility "Explain Status" option show that the Spyder 3 loaded LUT is no longer active?

Thanks...

It would be wonderful if live worked that way. But LUT data is anonymous. So the only way to know if what is in the LUT matches what is in the profile is to call it up from both places, and do a comparison. Given that its faster and simpler to just flash the data to the LUT again instead, thats what we do. Except for that small number of users who have a compulsion to shut down every utility they can, to save cycles, or be in more control, or whatever, who turn off the LUT reload function. Short answer, again: Turn on the LUT reload function, and don't worry about it. If your screen makes an odd flash every minute with it on, then you have some other utility aggressively trying to control your LUTs, and you need to find it and disable it. If not, then all is well with the LUT reload function on.

Thanks so much...this approach gives me a handle on what to look for...
