PFP+PSCS2+Canon i9950=yellow cast in prints

PFP+PSCS2+Canon i9950=yellow cast in prints

2006-04-09 by ellmer67

Hello all,

I bought PFP because I was fed up with always having to compensate when
printing on Illford Classic Pearl paper and Canon papers. But I have
exactly the same problem now, after calibrating my monitor and getting
a profile for my printer/paper. I am still getting a srong yellow cast
and this is present even in the test print from PFP to check the
profile (although a bit less obvious). I am really lost and don't know
what to do anymore... I thought this product would solve my probems,
has anyone got an idea?
Thanks very much for your help

Stephan

Hello Stephan,
maybe your viewing condition is very cool light (~10000 Kelvin),
for example skylight through a north side window.
Try the PreciseLight Color Teperature slider to the right (cool 12-15)
to compensate that or/and try annother light for viewing your prints.

Best,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your reply but I have the same problem under different
lighting and printing without using the profile is good (no yellow
cast) so the problem comes when using profiles (the same happens when
I use Illford profiles...)

Sounds like its not PrintFIX PRO then, but your profile application
method. First off; are you aware that custom profiles need to be
applied at the application level, with driver color management set to
"none"; instead of being applied at the driver, as canned ones can?

I use PSCS2 and apply the profiles in "print with preview" "let photoshop
determine colors" then in the printer driver (canon i9950) I choose the
paper quality, the size and the orientation. I also uncheck the ICM box and
choose "none" in the list. I don't know what I am doing wrong...
The other thing is that there is a yellow cast even in the printed "test
profile".
Thank you for your help

I have tried with all 4 rendering options and with or without black
point comp still the same yellow cast. The cast is really obvious
(looks really bad)
Thanks

Hi again Stephan,
try to use another application for printing, Qimage for example.
That will be one way to figure out if something is wrong with your
photoshop workflow. By the way I think photoshop is not the optimal
choice for printing photos, processing them yes, but not for printing.
You can download a trial version of Qimage from www.ddisoftware.com.
Will have an eye on this thread and help if you have problems with Qimage.

Best,
Peter

Hi Peter,

I will try your suggestion but the problem is that I get the yellow cast
even when I print the test profile page from PFP itself (not using PSCS2)...

Re: PFP+PSCS2+Canon i9950=yellow cast in prints

2006-04-11 by Johnny Eades

Hello Stephen,

I too ran into a similar situation when first using Printfix Pro to
create a printer/paper/ink profile. It was s misunderstanding on my
part on where to apply the printer profile and when. I found that when
using Photoshop, it had to be done at the very beginning of the
workflow. This is the method that worked for me.

Open your image in photoshop and then Edit>Convert to Profile:Costco
Glossy Paper
View>Costco Glossy Color (this can also be chosen by Ctrl-Y (windows
if you have used the profile before)
Print with Preview>Options>Color handling--Let Photoshop determine
colors. Printer Profile>Costco Glossy Color
Then go through your usual Page setup and then print your image. Your
yellow cast should go away. I had a blue cast and this solved that
problem and led me to my color world after working in BW for 40 years.

Your friend in Photography,

Johnny Eades

Stephan,
if you have a chance to test your printer connected to another
computer, then do it! Now I'm so far to believe that your current
system is corrupted someways. Or at least start with installing or
reinstaling the latest printer driver.
But let me also count some things.
a) Nozzle check is ok.
b) Print Head Allignment is done
c) You're using the Canon OEM inks.
d) ICM checkbox is unchecked.
e) Print Type is set to none.
f) All other colour sliders are set to neutral.
g) Correct Media Type is selected (Photo Paper Pro Media setting is
useless for every other paper than Canon PR-101 !)

We will fix it !
Peter

Re: PFP+PSCS2+Canon i9950=yellow cast in prints

2006-04-12 by peter_woelk

Hi Stephan,
years ago I had an i9000 and mine (and others too I heard in forums)
had sometimes a problem with the light cyan cart which results in
yellowish prints. I have no experiences with the i9950, but I think it
too uses the light colors twice or three times more intense than the
other colors (i9000 did).
This high volume usage caused a failure (sucking air?) mostly of light
cyan...at that time a nozze check or simple test image was ok, only
when used heavily, it failed. Replacing the light cyan cart (it never
was empty!) was the solution for two or three of those cart incidents.

Best,
Peter

Hi Peter,

Well, to be on the safe side I have put 8 new cartridges and it doesn't
improve things. And I don't think it could be the problem because I get
fairly good colours when using the printer's drivers (but not perfect...)

The other thing is that there is a yellow cast even in the printed "test
profile".

Sounds like a viable workflow. Yet you get casts in two companies' profiles and in raw prints.

I don't recall what combination you are using, but there's something unusual going on here....

If you are using Epson inks, the cross test is to print via the Epson profiles, using them in the same location, with the same workflow, as custom profiles. You should not get a yellow cast with Ilford and ColorVision profiles via that flow, while not getting it with Epson profiles used in the same manner.

Today I used the calibration tool in PFP (black/white) and then
measured the white patch and it reads it as grey-ish not white. Is this
normal?
Also the colours on the printed target are closer to what I see on the
screen (calibrated with the spider) than the colours read by the

SNIP

The white calibration patch reads .12 density on mine, the Black reads 2.28.

The printed target colors tend to look brighter than what the spectro reading seems to
show. But this is probably because the "pure" phosphor image on the screen is near the
full gamut possible, while what is printed on the paper is a lot more limited than that!

While reading the patches you see the comparison of what the paper actually is recording
for a patch, compared to the full gamut possible for that patch.

This difference is what the profiling program reconciliates, to give you the best possible
results on the paper being profiled.

On good quality inkjet papers, I find in reproducing paintings, I find I have to "throttle"
back the saturation of the file to make it match the original art. The beauty of PFP is that
you can customize your profile to match your desired result by using the sliders!

Stephan,
...phew, take one of your yellowish prints and look at it under an old
fashion bulb light (between 40 and 100 Watts) please. Make sure that
no other light comes into the room (from outside or from any other
light source) please let me know if the yellowish print looks obvious
more neutral under the bulb.

Best,
Peter

PS
I saw that you call the 'spectrocolorimeter' a 'spectro'. If you
continue doing this, the digidog will come along and bark at you! :)
...sorry, that was an insider joke, but I could not resist.

.... but it is a "spectro". You mean people get confused between
spectrocolorimeter and spectrophotometer? Yes sometimes they do.
Technicaly our eyes are spectrocolorimeters not spectrophotometers ...
really fancy ones at that! It just makes the physics of color vision
that much more fascinating.

A few observations:

1) Dogs are red-green colorblind
(http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/LA/DrP4.htm ). Unless I want to have
problems with my greens, what use would a digital dog be in color
management? Besides getting the newspaper...

2) THE Digital Dog had an SEC non-disclosure complaint lodged against
him. He may be too busy worrying about the Feds and keeping his
consulting contracts after wagging his tongue (the complaint named those
firms as well) to bark. ;-)

3) Do digital dogs use digital hydrants?

normal?

If you mean you measured the white tile, and it wasn't perfectly white, that is indeed perfectly normal. The white tiles shipping with hundred thousand dollar laboratory spectros aren't white either. Any tile that would measure white would have so many other issues (whiteners, fluorescence, non-neutrality, spikey spectra, you name it) that it would be more trouble than it was worth.

Also the colours on the printed target are closer to what I see on the
screen (calibrated with the spider) than the colours read by the
spectro...

Don't put too much stock in this measured patch/what you see on screen relationship. The patches are sent to the screen as raw RGB values, there is no intention that they will match anything, only that they will indicate relative values to keep you place in measuring a target. Besides, many if not most, of the patches are out of either the gamut of the monitor, or that of the printer, so would not be a match even under fully color managed conditions.

Hi,

I just tried your suggestion and converted to the custom profile but still
the same problem. The profile provided by Ilford is way better but not
perfect...

Hi,

On mine the white reads L=90.63 a=-1.19 b=-1.22 and black L=6.23 a=1.79
b=-3.35

Thats not identical to what I get for mine, but then it doesn't need to be, as each spectro is custom calibrated to its base. My results are certainly close to that (within a percent or so); so there is no reason to believe there is anything wrong with your hardware.
