How Often?

How Often?

2006-04-13 by hanson102

i hope my question here is not too elementary... anyway...

i just got my PFPro Suite and i'm starting to use it. so far, it's
working fine. i still have to do some more tests.

PFPro Suite users use this for various printers - inkjets, lab
printers, large format printers, etc. the frequency of printing
varies for a lot of us. some of use may print heavily on our inkjets
while some goes to the lab for majority of their prints and seldom use
inkjets at home.

my question is, how often should we build a printer profile?

if we use inkjets, should we build a printer profile,
a. everytime we replace inks
b. after every x number of prints
c. after every x number of days

if we go to the lab for prints, should we build a printer profile,
a. everyday
b. after every x number of x size prints
c. after every x number of days

my follow up question is, how often should we calibrate our monitors?

do we calibrate our monitors,
a. everyday
b. after every x number of days irregardless of monitor operation
c. after every x number of hours of monitor operation

regards,
david

Inkjets are very stable over time, I have no qualms about using a year old profile, if the inks and media are consistant. A laser, on the other hand, really deserves to be profiled everytime a front comes through, and the humidity changes... Photolabs are really a matter of chemical consistancy; if they are linearized well after each adjustment of chemicals, then a profile can be used indefinately, unless type of photo paper or chemicals used changes.

In that line, how consistant are the various ink manufacturers? I use MediaStreet bulk inks, should I profile every time I replace a bottle of ink?

With bulk ink systems, the problem is less the batch to batch consistancy, but settling, evaporation, and line conditions. Many bulk users don't really use as much ink as they should with a bulk system, and depending on the ink type may have one or another of the problems noted above. If you don't print enough to empty the bulk system every three months, you should consider whether a bulk system is really for you, or whether carts will be more foolproof for your lower printing quantities.
