prc-100 no wireless card inserted

2014-01-02 by <steven@...>

i have a disklavier mark iv and the prc-100 will not connect to the mark iv. controller still has interface, no connect. it is running version 2 of the software and would like to upgrade. i was told i have to upgrade to 3 then thru an internet connection i can upgrade to 4. problem is the mark iv is not on line, is the prc-100 the only way to get the mark iv on line. second question is can i up grade the software on the mark iv with out it being online, and does the upgraded software give me any more control over getting the mark iv online with out a prc-100. lastly, do you know where i could rent a prc-100 for an hour

If you have the original, YAMAHA labelled, card, it may be worth trying another card (Ambicom, etc, quite cheap from Amazon). The original cards were quite low in power. If that doesn't work, you may have a problem with the CF card interface, either on the PRC-100 or on the motherboard of the I/O unit on the piano. If it is on the motherboard, you may get away with using a PCMCIA - CF card adaptor ( not tried that myself, but I have heard that it works). If the problem is with the PRC-100, you can update the piano to Version 3 via CD and then go to version 4.xx via the internet. You'll get iPhone/iPad/iPod connectivity via your wireless broadband router. This will allow you to use a free app to control most basic function. Replacing the motherboard or PRC-100 will be seriously expensive, so, unless you're doing really complex stuff, I would try one of the previous options.

STEVEN and JASON,

Lets see if we can get your PRC-100 connected to your piano. Follow my instructions carefully. Hopefully, at the end of the process your remote will be connected to your Disklavier.

PHASE 1:
- First thing, power down the piano.

- Press the STOP button on your PRC-100. The PRC-100 will go to sleep.

- Turn the remote over. You are going to remove the battery. To do so, slide the slide switch from Normal Operation to Replace battery. Remove cover.

- Remove battery

- Look for RESET and the arrow pointing to a square hole.

- With your stylus, put it in the square hole and lightly push in. You will feel a little button get pressed when you do this. Your PRC-100 is now reset.

- Reinstall the battery. Replace battery cover, and switch the slide switch to Normal Operation.

- Power up the piano.

- Press the STOP button on the PRC-100 to wake it up. Wake up will take 2 minutes.

- PRC-100 should now connect to Disklavier. If not, perform PHASE 2.

PHASE 2:
- Tap on the MENU icon at the bottom of the PRC-100 screen.

- Tap on NETWORK

- The screen will now display NAME with a DKV****** I.D. below it or TEMPORARY xxxx below it. Tap on DELETE. Then tap on YES, then tap on X in the upper right corner of the PRC100.

- Get under the piano and hold your PRC-100 close to the I/O center (the largest box under the piano). Then tap on PIANO ASSIGN, then tap on OK. Keep the PRC-100 close to the I/O center. Hopefully, it will connect to the piano. If so, a DKV******* piano ID will be displayed on the PRC-100. If so, you are connected.

Let me know the results. If we get you connected, then we can discuss the other issues you have raised.

While you're under the piano, it's also worth having a look at the power supply - an oblong black box. There should be 4 LEDs in a row - one blinking and 3 on permanently.

FOUND 1-1 replacement for Ambicom WL1100C-CF/Yamaha wireless 802.11b CF card ==> DLink DCF-660W

So my PRC-100 has landed on the floor a number of times, and several weeks ago, it landed on the floor one too many times. It would no longer connect with my Mark IV! :(

I thought maybe it just reset - so I tried various things to get it to re-pair with the piano - nothing worked. Finally, I figured I'd diagnose if my wireless card had gone bad. If you go into the Qtopia menu on the bottom left - and click on Settings, Network - you should be able to see Services. You can try pairing your device with a 802.11b network (say your own wireless router, or guest network). You can manually change the ESS-ID to either your guest network or your Piano's network's name (My Piano is DKV221XXX). If your wireless card is working, when you click on the Current tab - you should see a connection along with Signal and Quality % bars. If not, your wireless card may be bad.

Mine did not have any readings. So what I did was I turned off my Piano, and popped out it's Ambicom card out - and plugged it into my PRC-100. I found that right away my PRC-100 could see my guest network - so I had narrowed it down to the card.

I went onto eBay to try to find an Ambicom WL1100C-CF - unfortunately, there seems to be one seller that has a lock on all these used CF cards (PCMONDE) and is selling them for about $70-80! If you're lucky you can find a working used one for around $10-25. I figured that there must have been a number of equivalent units that used the same chipset during that time frame, so I started searching to see if there were any 802.11b cards that were compatible with the Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 (essentially our PRC-100 is a rebadged one). I found that the Ambicom ises a Prism 2.5 chipset - so I searched for compatible device lists...and found that the Dlink DCF 660W was on the list. Bought one off of eBay...and just confirmed that it works without any tinkering! My PRC-100 is now as good as new.

So we have another viable replacement alternative for this part. Hope this helps someone!

There are a number of CF wireless cards available on Amazon or Ebay which might work (usually GBP12.00-18.00, last time I looked)
