Service Manual and Schematics for MarkII DKC100R

2014-12-30 by Brad Harper

Hi All,

I am looking for a Service Manual and Schematics for MarkII DKC100R

I am Having a "PWM over" error, shortly after starting playback, so I am
looking for a Service Manual with Schematics for the Solenoid Power supply,
and any good advice on tests, and what to look for.

That's a good starter discussion.

Thanks for your Help. Brad

This could be a damper pedal solenoid out of adjustment. When it heats up it shuts down the entire system. If it was a power supply it probably would not start to play at all. An experienced Disklavier tech is best equipped to make this adjustment. Otherwise you will find it in the service manual or the maintenance manual instructions how to do this.

Thanks Carol,

Could this have been caused by moving the piano to a new location? I did
not have this problem until the piano was moved. It was in storage for
about 6 months.

This link does not contain a Service manual though, is there still one
more manual?

Thanks again… Brad

Re: [disklavier] Service Manual and Schematics for MarkII DKC100R

2014-12-30 by Brad Harper

Carol,

A little more background. This problem has gotten worse over the last 10
Months. When the problem first started, the piano would play for about 40
Minutes, before the problem occurred. I could actually play an entire
Pianosoft diskette before it started happening. Around this time, I also
upgraded the firmware in the DKC100R controller, because it would not read
IBM formatted diskettes. The firmware fixed that problem, after a couple
tries(bad firmware on the shelf). I started using the system more because
I could buy titles that I could download from Yamaha and play. My system
has the MU50 sound module as well. The problem slowly got worse, with
shorter and shorter play times, before the error occurred. Now the system
will fault at the first song on a disk.

I took the cover off the foot pedal solenoid mechanism, and disconnected
the solenoids, but same issue. Watching the solenoids, it seems like the
power to them is weak, as the sustain solenoid, only actuated about half
of it’s travel. I disconnected the linkages, and it would travel the
whole distance. Still no help, about 30 seconds of song play.

I truly think the power supply is not working up to capacity, and then
causing the shutdown. That is why I am looking for a schematic, and
service manual, so I can test it, and see if it needs to be reworked.

The power supply is not an in-expensive item, and I don’t want to replace
it, unless I know it is the cause of the problem. Also I would much
rather fix than replace. I have a background in electronics, so I have no
problem tackling the repair, but I prefer to not do it blindly. A
schematic, with test voltages, and testing points, as well as a history of
common failures would be of great assistance. Since I retired, I watch
how I spend a lot more carefully. I don’t want to just parts swap for the
purpose of troubleshooting. I want to make sure that what I buy will
solve the problem.

Brad,

good luck. i often find myself in similar positions. i am very good with electronics, about 40 years experience and have even kept up with modern methods. i can fix pretty much anything and can read all but the worst schematics. the problem is that companies like Yamaha tend to keep this information to themselves. there are plenty of companies who see the benefit to both customers and to their company, to freely share this information. my guess is that Yamaha will never be one of these companies but i would certainly like to be proven wrong.

Spencer,

Thanks for the encouragement, as well as your contributions to recovering
many past performance titles. Our community of piano performance
enthusiasts is a small one, but with many people that freely share
experience, and many hours of work in preserving performance art. The
task of recovering old paper piano rolls, and converting them to midi,
allows other artists to build on the piece, and add full orchestration.
Also, then being able to print the musical score, as it was initially
performed is a step toward preserving the past. As these methods get
better and better, it is amazing to have Gershwin perform on your piano,
in your own living room, with a nuance that only he could provide.

Re: [disklavier] Service Manual and Schematics for MarkII DKC100R

2014-12-30 by Carol Beigel

The reason I asked if it was a grand piano is that the only time I have seen this error message when a Disklavier grand was recently moved. There is a round connector with several pins that connects the pedal lyre with the rest of the piano. It has a round collet which is to screw to untighten or tighten that cable. Unfortunately, an experienced mover would try to turn the whole thing and mess up the pins inside. Once the collet is loosened, the conector should be pulled down and not twisted to disconnect the pedal lyre from the piano. Fortunately when I did this repair years ago, the cable was an available part. The entire pedal assembly needs to be taken apart to replace the cable. Hopefully Bill Brandon will chime in here to confirm (or not!) this problem. You might crawl under the piano yourself and disconnect this cable the proper way and check the pins. Once I had this problem because the cable LOOKED like it was properly attached but it was not! Like most things electronic, disconnect, reconnect and try again!

Our community of piano performance enthusiasts is a small one, but with many people that freely share experience, and many hours of work in preserving performance art. The task of recovering old paper piano rolls, and converting them to midi, allows other artists to build on the piece, and add full orchestration. Also, then being able to print the musical score, as it was initially performed is a step toward preserving the past. As these methods get better and better, it is amazing to have Gershwin perform on your piano, in your own living room, with a nuance that only he could provide.

Around this time, I also upgraded the firmware in the DKC100R controller, because it would not read IBM formatted diskettes. The firmware fixed that problem, after a couple tries(bad firmware on the shelf). I started using the system more because I could buy titles that I could download from Yamaha and play. My system has the MU50 sound module as well. The problem slowly got worse, with shorter and shorter play times, before the error occurred. Now the system will fault at the first song on a disk.

Watching the solenoids, it seems like the power to them is weak, as the sustain solenoid, only actuated about half of it’s travel. I disconnected the linkages, and it would travel the whole distance. Still no help, about 30 seconds of song play.

I don’t want to just parts swap for the purpose of troubleshooting. I want to make sure that what I buy will solve the problem.

Hi Carol,

I did disconnect that harness, and reconnected it, and it was loose when I
first checked it. I also did a check that spencer suggested, which is to
record a run of the keys, and then playback only that to see if it stops
at a certain key. The problem is now it has progressed to not playing
anything.

Update on the Piano Power Off #15 "PWR OVER” Error on a Mark II GH1B
Grand DKC100R with MU50 after about 30 Seconds of Play.

I ran the Error History, here are the results:
Sensor LED ON error #8 Count = 094
Sensor Not Connected #9 Count = 085
Piano Power Off (PWM OVER) #15 Count = 039

I removed the power supply and dis-assembled it, and ran tests on all the
Output Voltages and inspected all components for signs of Overheating,
Leakage, cold solder joints and Failure. The Power supply tested out as
normal, in fact looked rather New.

I replaced the incoming power cable, and power strip with a premium grade
replacement.

I read all the service manuals, and studied all of the schematics, block
diagrams, Error Descriptions, and Troubleshooting manuals.

The DGP1/DGA1 service manual on page 60 gives this description of the
Error Under the PK-CTL Board – Protect Function:

No Message Condition Contents and Countermeasures

15 Piano Power Off The keyboard & sustain, soft / shift pedal 100V (120V
for Grand) of power to Keyboard and pedal drive OFF.
(PWM OVER) playback stop. Playback function cannot One or more key drive
transistors have become too hot and the
be restored until the drive transistor(s) protect circuit has activated. ®
Check the drive board
has/have cooled down sufficiently and
the power has been turned off, then
turned back on.

The DGA1XG Service manual lists the PK-CTL Board Part Number as VU691100
for the DGH1BXG model
The Block Diagram shows a Thermo Protect F1 on the Gate Array with inputs
from Thermostats on the Drive A, B and Pedal Units. They all look like
there are in series to Ground,
so the opening of any thermostat will signal the thermal protect to
shutdown the piano.

Tomorrow, I am going to adjust the Pedal Solenoids, the Half pedal
settings, the pedal linkage gaps, and put a meter on the Thermostat line
to see if it opens during play.

It kinda makes sense that there maybe something wrong at the pedal unit,
because it was removed during the move. The pedal Solenoids are huge, so
I can understand
If they are creating a lot of heat on a drive transistor at 120VDC, enough
to trigger a thermostat overheat.

Schematics have been very helpful as well as component adjustment info and
error information.

Will let you know of the progress…

Good morning, everyone.

Brad, your detailed information is fascinating. Good luck with this!

I have no information to offer you except the following: I have a DC6 IIXG PRO. At one point, a mechanical issue developed with the sustain pedal solenoid and trapwork. At this point, I cannot recall how the problem developed nor over what period of time. The bottom line was this: the sustain pedal no longer moved freely.

As a pianist, I had not noticed a gradual increase in the resistance of the pedal, which leads me to suspect that my problem developed slowly over time. Upon comparison with other pianos, it was obvious that it took too much effort to move my pedal, and therefore the solenoid had to work too hard and errors resulted.

Ultimately it was necessary to make a variety of adjustments to the trap work to get things working smoothly—and I have had no problems since. My Disklavier technician took care of the matter for me.

Regards,
PianoBench
