DKCR100 Question

DKCR100 Question

2015-04-26 by Joe Kadlec

The DKC100R Controller on my 1996 Disklavier 5' 8" baby grand has died and
replacement units are next to impossible to find. I may be able to buy a
used DKC100XG, which looks like it's the same generation but with a little
less in capabilities. Can anyone tell me if the DKC100XG can be
substituted for the DKC100R to record and play the piano? I'll appreciate
any thoughts. Thanks.

The DKC100XG is a playback-only unit.

You say your DKC100R control unit has "died". What do you mean by that?

Thanks for the info about the XG being just a playback unit. I guess "died" is a pretty vague. We have two problems. The disk drive doesn't work (I think it was toddler grand kids inserting something). Now the controller won't turn on (possible a fuse or maybe the power supply, which I can have a tech run down for me). Anyway, my thought was if I can find a used controller, it probably wouldn't cost much more than a new disk drive and I'd have spare parts for future use.

Joe,

Most likely the control unit is not coming on because the control unit ON/OFF switch has died. Yamaha probably has the switch available, and I don't it would be that expensive. An option would be to have an electronics tech "eliminate" the switch and then connect your piano's power cord to a switched power strip.

They also should have floppy drives available, but the drive is NOT necessary if you are willing to play your piano from an external device like your computer or DKC-800, connected to your DKC100R via MIDI.

Thanks Bill. I plan to mostly use the disklavier to record my wife (songwriter) on our computer through the midi; she prefers the piano to an electronic keyboard. Sounds like I may just need to replace or bypass the power switch for my needs. I appreciate your help.

Glad to help Joe. I remember that there was some On/Off switch failures with the DKC100R.

Try pushing the button to the ON position and hold it there. If the control units comes on at all, then it most likely is the switch.

Thanks again Bill. I'll take a look at the switch when I get back to the piano.
