Floppy Drive to USB Flash converter for DKC5R

Floppy Drive to USB Flash converter for DKC5R

2015-06-13 by cmancus1@...

Hello Everyone

Im a new Disklavier owner. I bought an MX-84 with DKC5R Disklavier. Of course it only works with floppy disks. I came across a number of devices that replace the floppy drive with a unit that allows USB thumbdrives as the media. I would need a great deal of data to determine if this would work in my DKC5R and am having great difficulty finding details about the product.

If there is anyone who has looked into this or has detail info on the product(s) I would be very appreciative.

thanks and i look forward to contributing here.

Hi Carl, (great name btw)

I was looking at doing the same thing for probably the same reasons. It all ended up being too difficult and finally I have ended up with what is probably a better solution. That is simply connectin a small laptop with a midi cable to the disklavier. That way you can play files directly from the internet etc... Also you can edit midi files etc and you don't have to worry about copying them to a usb stick to play them. Carl

I agree with Carl. My desktop is right near my disklavier, I play and record all MIDI files with computer, and don't bother with floppies. I even use virtual instruments on the computer to sync with disklavier piano for multitrack playback. I've transferred all MIDI files on floppies to computer HD with an external USB floppy drive - ten bucks on Amazon.

Thank you all for the suggestion. I am also looking into using MIDI connection to my laptop. Of course MIDI and Windows 8 dont seem to like each other anymore so it looks like its going to be a bit tricky, but i should get through directing the output to a MIDI device with some registry edits.

My biggest issue with this approach has been finding a MIDI PLAYER that will allow me to load thousands of MIDI files or playlists and then let them play continuously on the Disklavier. Any suggestions for the best products out there to play the files?

thanks Again

Carl

i am using 8.1 and have no problem with midi. i did write a little desktop application that allows you to change the default midi player without having to get in to the registry yourself. there are certain cases where that might be useful.

this blog has some information on playing the LX computer using Media Monkey. search for LX http://spencersviews.blogspot.com/ the same applies to the DKV. using Media Monkey is the best way to play, bar none but there are a couple of complications to make it really good. MM out of the box does not play midi files so you need to find and install the addon. then if you want to display meta data you need another addon for that and you need to create a database with the meta data. meta data is a problem for any midi files because no one agrees as to how to annotate them. for this reason it is really best to convert your midi files to audio files using mid2pianocd. then you can use the many tagging tools including mine for MP3 files. i forget which DKVs work with mp3 files but if you make really high quality files i think there would not be a problem.

another possibility is my free midi file player from my web site on the download page. spencerserolls.com it was written specifically for my files that have metadata in keywords that the program will display in collection and playlist windows. i have tools to add this data from text files and make these programs available to anyone who wants to use them.
i also have other tools that rename files with long file names based on information in the track name. this can all get very complicated but i know of at least a few people who set up systems with tens of thousands of files.

For the midi player, VanBascos midi/karaoke ( http://www.vanbasco.com/ ) works great on old windows and it's free. Not sure on newer stuff. I'm happy with it. I have one very old windows computer for converting old Yamaha proprietary disks and I use this program there. I have 600-700 files on it no problem. All my other computers are Apple and I use Sweet Midi Player on those. They offer the best support I've ever come across for any software. They've very responsive and have helped me with problems that had nothing to do with their program. But, on the desktop application, it doesn't have a random play feature. The Ipad application does have random play although it's not as random as you'd think. They are working to modify that, so I'm told. I'm pretty sure they have a free trial or demo. http://www.ronimusic.com/ Well worth checking.
Best of luck.

I use VanBasco as well for simple playback of MIDI files into DKV. Works great.

For recording, or multitrack playback, I use more sophisticated MIDI sequencing or programs or DAWs.

if you want really random playing, i have a program that names all files in a folder with random number names. you could copy a folder with files you want to play randomly, rename them with random numbers and then make a playlist of the whole folder and play in sequence. since the names are random it will play every song in random order and not repeat any.

www.spencerserolls.com/rename_files_random.zip
if you want the rename as random program.
for safety reasons you have to specify an extension for the files to rename but still you can do a lot of damage with this program if you run it on an important folder such as windows. the program defaults to the folder from which it is run so it can not mess things up if you are careful. if using it on your music files be sure to use copies (duh)
