DKC-850 upgrade questions

DKC-850 upgrade questions

2015-11-29 by pgosselinqc@...

Just upgraded my father's Mark III Playback Bay Grand from the DKC-55CD (the CD went dead on it) to the DKC-850 and have a zillion questions:

1-Is it possible to transfer Floppy disk content without buying the USB floppy drive ?

2-How does one structure a USB thumb drive to set up MIDI files as "Albums" and/or Playlists ?

3- Is is possible to randomize/shuffle Songs/Albums/Playlists on the DKC-850 or via an iPad/iPhone app? I haven't tried those apps yet due to question #4.

4- What's the recommended hardware to bridge the DKC-850 via Wi-Fi or Electical wiring onto a home network ?

5- What would be the software recommendation under MacOS for software to modify MIDI files to enable consolidation of MIDI channels to get both cords/melody to play on the real piano ? I've been playing with QMIDI to mute out some MIDI channels but that software doesn't allow "merging" of MIDI channels.

6- What is/was the purpose of the DIN-8 connector labled "CD Control" that is now left unused ? There is a huge ferrite bead/choke on each of the cable. The DKC-850 upgrade instructions don't mention this cable at all.

7- The Mark III has built-in speakers and a large amp underneath that now has the DKC-850 plugged into the AUX IN L/R inputs. There was nothing plugged into this before (normal ?). Anyhow this amp has a huge amount of background HUM present on it. Is this a known problem ? How can this be fixed ?

8- The DKC-850 doesn't always correctly display the song name/filename. Sometimes is displays ********* as the song name. Weird. The DKC-850 is brand new, should I look to upgrade the firmware ?

That's about it for now. Thanks.

1-I think yes hrough the « FromToPc » function with ethernet connection, where im not sure is if there is a protection on the files of yamaha floppies… Ill have to make try outs. Maybe someone here knows first hand.

3- You can have the dkc-850 random play songs with the function « timer play » in « set-up » menu (page 51 of the manual)

4- I use a router and ethernet cables on my system, for wifi I dont think the dkc-850 is equipped, maybe a workaround exist.

5- I use Qmidi which is pretty good. But I use also another software to allow more flexibility like channels swapping or muting or redirecting its called Midi-Connections by Sarayuth Thampokin (on appl store). I send my midi data from the Qmidi to a virtual output (like IAC Bus1) and in Midi-Conncection the midi data is redirected from that IAC Bus1 to the Dkc-850 with all the modifications defined in the Midi-Connections pgrm.

The same company has the MidiKit program which permits to modify midi files.

8-Maybe that to do with the difference between « title », f »ile name » and « sequence name »… in the MidiKit pgrm you can see that each file can have differences between these fields. I dont remember which one the dkc-850 displays…

For the firmware there is a function within the « Internet » facility of the unit when connected to the network. It will tell if there is a new firmware available.

I have been using the dkc-850 for a couple years and it does what its suppose to do. Manu features are missing and the whole design and way of using is a bit « dated » considering where we are at today (the sound module brings you back decades, the sequencing capacities have been unfortunately curtailed severely etc… ) but its workswell … I wish secretly for a completely new unit LOL

Hi, again.

Thanks for the information. Apparently Thampokin’s stuff is not currently available, which explains why my search of the App Store failed to produce results.

Greetings
Your right George its not available (not even on the Japanese or chinese stores) anymore. Lets hope it ll come back because its the most sophisticated midi app I could find at a reasonable price . I have it I could "share" it with you people but I dont know if it would work without the installer...

Otherwise "Midi PatchBay" and "old" application that still works fine under the latest OS version can do what is missing in the Qmidi. Just operate it again as a bridge between Qmidi and doc-850; You can mute or redirect midi channels, for instance send all data to channel 1 (useful for the disklavier) etc...

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
