1996 Disklavier II - power supply failure?

1996 Disklavier II - power supply failure?

2015-12-02 by Peter Roy

I am new to the group, looking to purchase a used disklavier.

I would REALLY Like a U3 in polished mahogany, but seems most uprights are
black.

Regardless, looked at a 1996 U1 disklavier today in Toronto, but the control
system would not power.

It has been in storage for 10yrs, unwrapped and when we tried, both myself
and the owner heard a click.

It would appear that there is NO Vcc on the system board up top, there is a
transistor which may have failed, or maybe the aged electrolytic around it.

I can troubleshoot, but looking for a schematic to do this properly.

Piano is in very good condition, I expect this is a simple power supply
failure but need information carefully determine for certain.

Hi Peter.
Are you on Facebook, get in touch with Bill Brandom or Robert Charles Khumann they can give you the service manual for the particular model of Disklavier Control unit you have. My best guess would be that it is a MK IIXG of some kind. If you give either of them the DKC model number they should be able to give you the manual which has block and wiring diagrams and I think the circuits and specifications and parts for the whole system, very nice.
Hope that helps.
Cheers

Oh and btw I always wanted a mahogany U3 Disklavier too for my own front room or the work, right now we have a 1989 Yamaha satin Mahogany MX100A very nice piano though.

Your right most of the upright disklaviers are U1 sizes ,here in Scotland I saw a 2004 DU1A with the MK III system on it with the CD drive.

It's very difficult to find a U3 variety as I think they only ever sold them in Japan as the HQ300 and other model names, to find a mahogany example is even more difficult, heck a standard Yamaha anything in mahogany is rare as hens teeth. I currently have a 1989 Yamaha G2B Disklavier with the big wagon PPG-10R unit connected to the piano. Yet I saw Richard Lawson Pianos who has U3 Disklaviers had a Mahogany G1 Disklavier almost the same as mine except it is 5 inches smaller and in mahogany instead of black like mines.

Peter,

Give me the DKCxxxx number on the front of the control unit. Then I will know which manual to give you a link to.

Peter,

If this piano was made for use in Japan, the control unit model number will begin with PPxxxxxx. Let me know the model of the control unit.

I am unaware of the significance of the "10". The "R" is for RECORD. The wagon grand was sold both as a record unit and a playback-only unit in Japan.

Ah right no probs.
I have somebody over here called Richard Norwood who has a Yamaha YU3 Disklaiver MKIIXG I think, must be imported from Japan and a G1 wagon in mahogany which like mine's is a Japanese import.
