Sweet Midi Player trouble

Sweet Midi Player trouble

2017-01-09 by Joe Palmer

Hello to all,I've been using SMP (Sweet Midi Player) with my Mac/ipad/iphone, etc. for quite some time. I have about 800 songs and many playlists. I am able to get all the songs transferred to each device (iphone, ipad, ipod) but cannot get the playlists on each device. Roni Music says they are supposed to sync the playlists via i-cloud. On both my Ipad (where the playlists are) and the iphone are signed into the same i-cloud account and that seems to be working. SMP however will not sync. In the settings, both devices are set to allow sync. I have emailed with Roni Music and they do not have any suggestions.
I have an Ipad Mini (9.3.5 latest) and my Iphone 5c (10.2). I have reset all the devices and re-logged into icloud on all. The SMP app is turned on under icloud.

I've spent at least 2 or 3 hours today trying to get this to work, but can't.I'm hoping someone here can point out what (probably) stupid thing I'm over looking.

Thanks to all.PianoJoe

i have no idea about the details and do know that Apple can make this sort of thing very difficult if you are not using their software (Itunes) that said, if all devices use the same format for the playlist files (all the various windows programs i use for multimedia of various types either use the same format or i have ways of converting them) is may just be a matter of finding where they are located and copying them manually from place to place. i have an application that allows more access to my iphone via the windows explorer than without it but i doubt i have access to all folders. i would hope that using a mac would allow better access but again we are dealing with Apple.

I have a program called Imazing that allows copying. That's how I got the 800 or so songs over to each device. They play just fine on all. The playlists however are in a protected area that you can't get to due to apples IOS. Rolf at Roni was aware of this. That's why he made them sync over Icloud. I just can't get it to do it.

Again, any ideas would be go gratefully accepted. I really want to get this to work and don't want to have to go and manually create the playlists. That will take hours and hours.
Thanks to all,Joe

that sort of problem is why i would never use an apple product for this sort of thing. i like my iphone for various reasons but would never have use an apple product for anything i would want to access and control.

i also stay away from any apps or programs that use proprietary file formats the contents of which i can not deal with as i choose.

Good evening, everyone.

PianoJoe, I gave this a try and had no difficulty.

In my case, I had the following circumstances:

—the latest iOS (10.2) on both an iPad and an iPhone
—the latest version of Sweet MIDI Player
—signed into the same Apple ID on both devices
—all MIDI files were at the top level of the Documents folder within Sweet MIDI Player

Not only did the playlists sync, but the app intelligently listed any missing files in red.

Re: [disklavier] Sweet Midi Player trouble

Hello George,Thanks very much for you help. The only difference in what I've got and you is that my Ipad mini is older so 9.3.5 is the latest IOS I can get for it. I'm wondering if that is the trouble. I don't know anyone with a newer Ipad that I could test this out although it would seem that since my playlists are on the ipad mini, I still wouldn't be able to get them to a newer Ipad.
Do you know of any product that would allow me to get into the files on the ipad where the plist is so I could just copy it directly? I used to do that on my older stuff but that went away with the latest IOS. I've been using Imazing but again now, I can't get to where the playlists are stored.
Thanks again for your effort.
Joe

Re: [disklavier] Sweet Midi Player trouble

2017-01-10 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

Joe, I dug out my iPad 2, which also runs iOS 9.3.5, and installed Sweet MIDI Player. Without making any explicit settings, I noticed that it synchronized my playlists from the cloud.

While playing around, I attempted to add a new playlist to my 9.3.5 device and got a message saying that I had exceeded the limit for the “lite” version of the software. Since I had previously purchased the “add-on” features that constitute the full version, I went ahead and restored my “in-app” purchase. This enabled me to create additional playlists on the 9.3.5 device and they were quickly synchronized to the other devices.

This leads me to wonder whether you have the full suite of features installed on all of your devices? If so, have you tried building a new playlist on your iOS 9.3.5 device and checking to see if it shows up on your other devices?

Using iMazing, I did note that one of my devices had a folder with the name of a playlist. Inside the folder were some files that were duplicates of files at the root level of the Documents folder. I suspect that an older version of iMazing used a different mechanism for creating playlists and this folder was created a long time ago when I first made a playlist. Perhaps, you have some remnants of this older playlist system which should be deleted.

As for a product that would let you edit the plist: You won’t find one. I am an iOS developer, and I can tell you that with recent versions of iOS, Apple has locked down various areas of the iPad in order to keep them from prying eyes. For example, it used to be possible to view and even gain access to all sorts of app components. I’m sure most developers appreciate the fact that this is no longer possible. (I hasten to add that I personally enjoyed looking at the construction of other apps. I saw some weird stuff!)

In particular, it would be a support nightmare for a developer if customers were editing plists themselves. These plists typically store all sorts of settings, and when they get messed up, the apps can crash or have other problems. In general, the best way to get rid of a problem plist is to delete and reinstall the app—despite the fact that that can be a pain.

PianoBench

Disklavier Mk IV - lost the ability to connect via iPad/LAN

2017-01-10 by Peter Gannon

I have a Mk IV Disklavier. It is working great, except recently the LAN network function has stopped working.

- It is as if the LAN port is dead – the IP address is not being seen by the router. The Ipad app cannot connect. This always worked fine – no problem with the iPads etc hooking up on the same router network.

- The issue seems to be that the Disklavier is not being seen on the network.

I've tried making a simple router setup, with just an iPad and the Disklavier hooked up to the router.

- The Disklavier IP doesn't show up on the list of connected devices on the router info page.
- And of course the Yamaha Disklavier app on the iPad doesn't find it either.
- The PRC-100 (dedicated handheld device) does work, and the Disklavier plays correctly using it. All songs play fine using that handheld controller.
- It is just the network (LAN cable) function that it is not working. I've checked the LAN cable and it works with the router using other devices.
- There is also a dedicated Wifi network that shows up called DKV222459 (I’m assuming that is for the PRC-100 only, and it doesn’t work anyway with the iPad hooked up to it).

Has anyone seen this, or has suggestions on how to look into this?

Presume you’ve tried a complete power-down and rebooting of the Disklavier including removing all power plugs and LAN connections at the Disklavier. There are numerous pages of advice on how to do this on the forum. It’s worked for me in the past.

Hello George,
Thanks very much for you help.

Hello again,First of all, George, I am tremendously grateful for you help. Thank you.
I deleted SMP on the iphone and re-installed it. It asked if I would like to purchase the upgrade from lite version, I said yes. It then said I already paid for it and do I want it free. Yes. It says I'm running the full version and if I try to do the upgrade again, it says "already purchased. I won't delete it on my ipad as that's where the playlists are. I tried to upgrade that and it also says already purchased. I assume this means I'm on the latest version on both devices. No matter what I do, I can't get them to sync. I created a new playlist on the ipad and it does not show up on the iphone.

Good morning, everyone.

Joe, I feel your pain. Regrettably, I don’t have many other thoughts to suggest. I would:

—Test with a 3rd iOS device (if available) to see if any 2 of your devices will sync.

—Verify that all installations of SMP are up to date. If you go to Settings : About, it should show that you are running version 3.7.4.

—Verify that iCloud syncing is working in another context, such as syncing your contacts and calendars.

—Do a settings reset of the iOS device.

In the case of a settings reset, go to the Settings app : General : Reset : Reset All Settings. Presumably this resets various stored settings without deleting apps and data. Before doing this, I would back up the iOS device, of course.

NOTE: I don’t know exactly what settings are reset. You might want to investigate that thoroughly before doing such a reset. Various help forums on the Internet often cite this procedure for eliminating odd behavior.

Good luck!

Just a random thought….is it possible there’s a conflict if both devices are open simultaneously?

i downloaded the following and also installed itunes on my pc which i had told myself i would never do. the program does provide access to my iphone and to many more files than just connecting it and "trusting" there is a folder named "sync" under "recordings. who knows, the playlists might be there but since i don't have any ... there are a bunch of other accessible folders but nothing else looks very promising.

Hello again,
First of all, George, I am tremendously grateful for you help.

I have logged on/off icloud on both devices, closed smp on both devices, got into my icloud settings on both devices and checked that it saw the other one. It does. No matter what I do, I can't get them to sync. I created a new playlist on the ipad and it does not show up on the iphone.

I am so frustrated. Do you have any other suggestions?

All my best,
Joe

Thanks again for your effort.

the program i mentioned might be of little use to your needs but i just discovered that it will be very useful for me. i can access my podcast folder and copy any MP3 i want. i never was able to do this before. there are also .plist files in the podcast folder. i assume this is some sort of playlist and maybe your app will show similar files.

Having both devices open simultaneously should not be a problem.

Re: Sweet Midi Player trouble

Hello George,

I did a reset of settings on both devices. I am on 3.7.4 on both also. I turned on icloud for Notes and tried it. It’s synced right away.

I got my sons old ipad. It’s 9.3.5. SMP on 3.7.4, icloud working (Notes did sync) and it also won’t sync SMP. All logged into the same icloud account.

I notice in the icloud settings you can turn on/off icloud for apps such as Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Safari, Notes, etc. It does NOT show SMP to turn on/off. Is this correct? Icloud syncing is turned on in SMP.

On both my Ipad (mini) and the iphone 5c, they have all the same 700 + SMP songs. On my sons old ipad, it only has the default songs that come with SMP.

I assumed it would pull the playlists over from the ipad mini but it doesn’t. I then created a playlist on the 5c with the exact same name as one of the playlists on the Mini. Still not luck. I also created a new playlist on the Mini and again, no luck.

There must be something simple that I’m overlooking and after hours and hours of trying, maybe I just keep missing the same thing.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Sweet Midi Player trouble

2017-01-13 by Joe Palmer

Update.I made a new playlist on the 5c and it showed up on the OLD ipad (9.3.5) but not my MINI ipad. I then did the same on the OLD and it showed up on the 5c and again, not my Mini. I can do anything on the MINI and it won't show up anywhere. I put a file in the new playlist on the OLD and it shows up on the 5c. I cannot put any files in playlists on the 5c, as it doesn't have the "+" sign. I'm guessing due to screen size.

There must be some setting wrong on my MINI. The trouble is, that's where all the playlists are that I want to get on my 5c. I'm trying to match each and every setting in both devices including those in SMP. I will note that both are running 9.3.5 (13G36) yet they are different on both devices. There are some setting choices on one that are not available on the other and vice versa.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE - IT'S FIXED !!!!So, I went through each and every setting between the 2 devices-Old and Mini. As I said above, the settings choices were not the same between the two devices which seems very strange to me. But, the one that I believe fixed it is the "language and region" setting. I now live in Thailand which is where I got the MINI. The region was set to Bangkok. I changed that to the US, which is what my OLD ipad is set to as well as the 5c. The MINI required a restart after the change, which I thought was interesting and had to accept. I was then goofing around with stuff and looked at the "recently played' playlist on each device and the songs in there were identical even though most of the songs were not even installed on the OLD. So then I made some new lists on the MINI and they showed up on the OLD and on the 5C. The existing playlists don't show up anywhere but if I clone them, the new cloned one shows up. One of the playlists has 456 songs in it and while the playlist shows up, it does not populate the list. I'm guessing this is because the list is too big. I do have enough icloud storage space so it's not that. Not sure what it is but I'll find a way to deal with that. I will check with Rolf at Roni Music and see if there is a limit to playlist size. The one that did irk me is that I had created a new playlist on the OLD when things weren't working that is the exact same name as one of my playlists. It had no songs in it as I was hoping they'd transfer. That playlist is now empty on all devices. I'll see if a restore through I-tunes will bring it back, but I'll probably delete SMP from the other devices until I get the playlists correct and then I'll re-install it.
So, thanks to the group and especially George for your efforts. You got me looking deeper and deeper which finally led to the answer.
All my best,Joe

SMP on 3.7.4, icloud working (Notes did sync) and it alsowon’t sync SMP. All logged intothe same icloud account. Icloud syncing is turnedon in SMP. On both my Ipad (mini) andthe iphone 5c, they have all thesame 700 + SMP songs. On my sonsold ipad, it only has the defaultsongs that come with SMP. I assumed it would pull theplaylists over from the ipad mini but it doesn’t. I then created a playlist on the 5c with the exact same name as one of the playlistson the Mini. Still not luck. I also created a new playlist on theMini and again, no luck. Re: [disklavier] Sweet Midi Player trouble

2017-01-13 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

Joe, this is a fascinating story, especially for me as I am both an iOS user and developer.

When you use an app, it is often hard to determine which entity is responsible for the various feature components. One reason that the iOS world is so successful is that Apple provides so many programming resources for developers. The developer starts with those resources and then builds on top of them.

In the case of iCloud syncing, quite obviously a lot of the feature is entirely handled by Apple. The developer accesses an API provided by Apple (and, hopefully, implements the API correctly), and then the iOS operating system and Apple’s servers do the rest. In all likelihood, the issue of the region setting was an issue that is in Apple’s control. You might want to point out this issue to Roni Music in case other customers bump into the problem.

As I mentioned in an earlier email, I suspect that SMP has changed the way that it handles playlists. That might explain why an old playlist does not sync but a new playlist does.

I noticed the same UI difference with the iPhone that you did: lack of a + button for adding to a playlist. This is what you should do on the iPhone:

—Tap the Playlist button.
—Select a Playlist.
—Tap the Edit button. At this point, the + button appears.
—Tap the + button and select as many files from the list that you wish.

NOTE: When selecting files from the list, it is not enough to tap the file name. You must tap the little + button to the right of the file name.

I'm trying to match each and every setting in both devices including those in SMP. I will note that both are running 9.3.5 (13G36) yet they are different on both devices. There are some setting choices on one that are not available on the other and vice versa.
>
> UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE - IT'S FIXED !!!!
> So, I went through each and every setting between the 2 devices-Old and Mini.

Peter, are you the Peter Gannon of PG Music?

Sam,
Yes, and thanks for the your support and nice comments about Band-in-a-Box. Atari v1 .... that’s a long time ago (1989 I think)!

Presume you’ve tried a complete power-down and rebooting of the Disklavier including removing all power plugs and LAN connections at the Disklavier. There are numerous pages of advice on how to do this on the forum. It’s worked for me in the past.
