PianoBench's suggestion for buying the DSR1 is the best advice in the long run. It is truly the least hassle solution. However, if you need music for a party tonight, use the blank diskette that came with your piano. It should be a 720k double density disk. Format this disk in your Disklavier and record a song on it. (To format the disk for the MX80 press the Record button while holding down the Stop button. Then press Play twice.) Download the dkvutil program from the file vault as well as some music files with the .fil extension. Run the disk copy program - dkvcopy - on the disk you just recorded on and use the same disk for the copy as well as the target. Now your computer will see this disk because something has been written on the first sector. Transfer some of those .fil songs to this disk. You may also need to run the Explore utility. Your disklavier should see these files. Some folks have claimed to be able to tape over the left hole on a high density disk (1.44) and fake the dkv into thinking it is a 720k disk. I never was successful at this. By time I send this, it will be about 10:00 pm your time. Maybe try this tomorrow, and just have a little more cheer tonight! Until you get the hang of these utilities, they can be very frustrating trying to get them to work on the fly. Happy New Year! Hello there... I just bought a used Yamaha with a MX-80 unit and was wondering also how to get MIDIs downloaded from the Internet to play on the disklavier. This thread is very timely! However, following Carol's instructions (thank you) I have hit two dead ends. What am I doing wrong? From Carol's message earlier today: > (1)It should be a 720k double density disk. Format this disk in your Disklavier and record a song on it. Check! I recorded by daughter playing one of her lessons. > (2) Download the dkvutil program from the file vault as well as some music files with the .fil extension. Check! It has five applications and a text file with instructions. (3) Run the disk copy program - dkvcopy - on the disk you just recorded on and use the same disk for the copy as well as the target. Now your computer will see this disk because something has been written on the first sector. Check! I saw some action on the screen--too fast to note what I saw--and then it was finished. (4) Transfer some of those .fil songs to this disk. This did not work! The Windows message I got was: "The disk in drive A is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Of course, I declined; this is my disklavier-formatted disk.) (5) You may also need to run the Explore utility. Your disklavier should see these files. This also did not work! The message I got was: "Windows has returned a meaningless error code. Is the disk write-protected, perhaps?" The only option at this point is to close the window. Any suggestions as to what to do next (short of buying a DSR1)?? Rich __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. MX80s only use 720k double density disks and only play ESEQ files. Any MIDI files you download need to be converted to the ESEQ format (.fil) The dkvcopy only works in real DOS; not running in a DOS window. You have to reboot your computer in DOS. If you are running Windows XP you might be out of luck. Someone got XP to work on a desktop with these utilities, but I did not get a laptop to work with XP Home. If possible, use an older computer floppy drive and some older double density disks. You can order them from www.shoplet.com Some people have successfully used a piece of tape to cover one hole in a high density disk. The Disklavier disks have nothing written in the first sector. Your computer must see something in this sector in order to recognize the disk. You could try copying the Sample disk that came with your DKV to the blank disk using the dkvcopy utility. Write protect the Sample Disk before you do this. A floppy disk can hold as many as 59 songs depending upon their size. I have found using the Giebler utilities (about $60) at www.giebler.com and a new supply of double density 720k disks works great. The dkvutil also works very well. I also dedicate an old laptop runing Windows 95 to do this. Even the old laptop with an 85 meg hardrive and a monochrome display runing Windows 3.1 is excellent for this purpose However, the DSR1 plays high density disks and MIDI 0 and MIDI 1 formats and has the XG ensemble sounds as well. It also has a memory disk built in. Good luck! Rich I also have an old MX-80. One solution is to by-pass the whole floppy disc step, if your computer is anywhere near your Disklavier. I run a midi cable from my Mac laptop directly into the DKV's MIDI IN port. Not an elegant solution, perhaps, but there is no conversion software for Macs vis a vis .FIL files, anyway. There are thousands of regular midi files on the Net. Just get a sequencer program that plays midi files (there are several freeware and shareware versions,) and install a midi card if you don't have one. Happy New Year! WSC

Dear Carol and WSC, Thanks for your replies. I have a dozen 720K disks from my old Mac days. However, presently I'm running XP far away from the piano. So a direct connect to the disklavier is out of the question without a big effort. I'll keep my eyes open for one of the legacy machines that can run dkvcopy, but it has become clear that I'm better off upgrading to DSR1 to match my desktop's capabilities. MIDI Magic: thanks for the link to the "Hands On" site. There is some cool stuff there. Finally, I used to use Band-in-a-Box (at least a couple of versions ago) when I had the Mac and a portable Yamaha keyboard. Let me echo that it is great software if you are considering buying it. Happy New Year to everyone here. Rich --- Carol Beigel <carolrpt@...> wrote: The > dkvcopy only works in real DOS; not running in a DOS > window. You have to > reboot your computer in DOS.
