swixo utilities

2003-01-17 by Carol Beigel

I am trying to get the dkutils to work - the Eseq file player from Swixo. I
can't even get it read ANY of my disks - not even the ones that are not copy
protected. Anybody ever get this program to work? I would like to be able
to recommend this program, but first I need to get it to work! Thanks for
your help.

If you're trying to run dkutils under Windows NT, 2000, or XP, the
low-level floppy disk access probably is blocked by the hardware
abstraction layer component of these operating systems.

Earlier versions of Windows such as 95/98/ME should not have this problem
(they permitted unrestricted hardware access by user programs).

Not sure if Robert Swirsky (the author) is planning to update this
software. If he is reading this, maybe he can chime in...?

I did not get the program to work at all under Windows 98. However, I did
manage to get it to read a floppy disk in an old laptop running Windows 95,
but it would only read a disk I had copied with dkvcopy. It would not read
a Yamaha disk. Isn't that what it is supposed to do? This is truly one
great idea of a program - if it works!

Hi Carol

I too have tried to get this to work. From what I can remember it
would play from a floppy but not from the hard disk.
I fail to see the point of putting a floppy in the pc to play as one
might as well put the floppy in the piano.

What I want to see is a program that will play Eseq files just like a
Midi player would. That way I can play the piano from the PC and
create play lists and draw from over 200 disks.

THAT is exactly what I want to do also! There are several very talented and
brilliant programmers on this list. What would be involved in doing this?
Why has this not been done before?

Good evening, everyone.

Regarding a MIDI jukebox for computer that will play E-SEQ and SMF,

If memory serves me correctly, there used to be just such a program (and a
pretty nice one) for Windows from Contois Music in VT
(http://www.contois.com). It was called Piano Player, I think. For some
reason, the program is no longer for sale.

PianoBench

The Contois "Piano Player" Version 1.0 (1997) did not play E-SEQ files
directly. Menu functions were available to import a "*.esq" file,
convert it to MIDI type 0 or 1, save the MIDI file, then import the file
as a MIDI file to be entered into the player's data base. The song
could then be tagged for play through a selected MIDI port. Version 1.0
required Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

Not a lot realy. The Eseq file is NOT too unlike a midi file. In fact
it is very close. I do have two programs that will do exactly as we
want but one is for the old BBC computer and the other is for the
Atari. Not much help when we have PCs.

I never heard of the Atari program. Atari ST, or an older Atari
computer?

What is the program?

Kent Swafford, who still has 3 working Atari ST computers

Re: swixo utilities

Hi Kent

It's a long story. A friend of mine bought a Roland sound canvas and
wanted to be able to play my Disk Orchestra Disks on his computer
(then an Atari). So he wrote a program. Basicly you put on a DOC disk
or PianoSoft disk, the program would read the disk title, look up the
songs on the disk from a table and present them as a menu for you to
select one or as many as you wanted to play in any order.
It would also convert DOC to Midi.
DOC disk are in the ESEQ format and have to be revoiced to be
compatable with midi.
Even Eseq2midi can not convert DOC disks as the tempo, plus other
things are in a different place within the files.
I am not sure, but I don't even think Eseq2midi will convert
PianosoftPlus disks that well due to the remaping of the voices.

He also wrote an Atari version of DKVCOPY which worked in exactly the
same way.

I have asked him to do one for the PC but he is too busy with other
things at the present.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
