DCD1 Upgrade

DCD1 Upgrade

2003-01-20 by PianoBench@aol.com

Good evening, everyone.

This week, Yamaha announced at the NAMM (National Association of Music
Merchants) show that it will be providing a feature update to the DCD1 so
that it can play Smart PianoSoft software when used with a compatible
Disklavier control unit. Smart PianoSoft software is the software that
combines commercial CDs (that you purchase separately) with floppy disk-based
piano recordings. Currently, Yamaha has about 500 software titles of this
sort already for sale or in the pipeline for sale in the near future.

The update has not been finalized, but sometime in the next few months, there
will be a flash memory upgrade for the DCD1 provided on floppy disk or as a
download. To install the update and to use the DCD1 in this new way, you will
need to attach two MIDI cables between the DCD1 and your Disklavier control
unit. The update disk will run from the control unit.

Compatible control units include the DSR1, the Mark IIXG vintage Disklavier
Pro, Mark IIXG Disklaviers that have the SmartKey feature, and Mark IIXG
Disklaviers that have the EMK1 expanded memory kit installed. Any other
owners of a Mark IIXG vintage Disklaviers should be able to upgrade their
control unit for this purpose by adding the EMK1 memory kit first.

The good news about this is that the most of the latest features associated
with CD-based software can be made available to all Disklaviers. Owners of
the early models (MX100AorB, Wagon Grand, MX80 series, and Mark II) can use
the DCD1 with this update if they have a DSR1.

This update does not include the ability to transpose the playback of the
DCD1 or to tune the playback--features that are available on the Mark III
system.

Regards,
PianoBench

WOW. Thanks PianoBench for that news. I have the MX100A with a DSR 1 and a
DCD1. Can't wait for that update. Good job YAMAHA.

I have a MX100A and would like to upgrade. How does one get a DSR1 and DCD1 in United States? What is cost for this upgrade?
Thanks

I have a Gran Touch (purchased almost three years ago) and DCD1. The
control unit is the DKC500RW. Will the Smart PianoSoft upgrade work with
this set-up?

The DCD1 is currently hooked up to my stereo system across the room from the
piano. I string a MIDI cable across the room when I want to use it. About
a year ago, M-Audio (then Midiman) announced a wireless MIDI system called
the Midair, which uses Bluetooth. It was billed to have a range of 50 feet.

Since then, the product has been delayed. Have you heard any news about
this product, and do you know whether it would work with the DCD1 and the
control unit (in lieu of the MIDI cable)?

Thanks.

Good afternoon, everyone.

In a message dated 1/20/03 11:05:22 AM, Bill writes:

<< I have a MX100A and would like to upgrade. How does one get a DSR1 and

Both products are available from Disklavier dealers. The products are sold
separately. Each has a suggested list price of $1,295.

Yes.

I am not aware of this product. You can find M-Audio on the web at:

http://www.m-audio.net/

Assuming that this product--when available--transmits MIDI data in the same
way that a MIDI cable does, then there should be no problem using it with a
DCD1.

In my studio, I solved the long length of cable issue by pulling the
baseboard out from the wall about 1 3/4 inches and putting a strip of wood on
top. This enables me to lay cables behind the baseboard at any time. I used
those round, plastic computer cable ports that you find on computer desks as
the point of entry or exit for the wire.

As time goes on, I have a tendency to change my studio setup with regard to
computer, audio, and MIDI cables. Regardless, the room always look tidy--at
least in this respect.

PianoBench

That's great news.

Thanks for the sugestion as to the cables. Unfortunately, it's not a
realistic option for me. I live in condo and had conduits for surround
sound wires put in when the building was under construction. However, there
is no room for a MIDI cable, and going through the walls would now be a
major project.

For anyone who is interested, I sent an e-mail earlier today to M-Audio
asking about the status of the Midair. The official response is that it is
"still in R&D."
