USING A PC FOR JUKE BOX ON MX80

USING A PC FOR JUKE BOX ON MX80

2003-02-09 by Don Shifris

I've been a member of this very helpful group for about a year and don't
recall seeing any information on this subject.

I would like to take all of my midi file diskettes, including the ones
purchased from Yamaha and load them into a laptop which would sit on the
MX80.

Then write a program to randomly select files to be sent to the piano via
Cakewalk or some other midi software product.

Has anyone done this?

Your MX80 does not play standard midi files. If it did, you could use one
of many available jukebox programs. However, an MX80 only plays Yamaha'a
proprietary format, ESEQ files. If you were to write a jukebox program to
play Eseq files, we would all be most gratefull! No one seems to have done
that yet.

Carol, while you are correct that the MX80 will not
play .mid files, it will play ANY midi on channel 1
brought in through the midi in port. I have driven
mine using any number of midi devices. Connecting a
laptop and driving the piano with cakewalk is a fine
plan. The problem comes when you use files with other
than piano solo data. Without a sound card you can't
do it, and there are delay problems to overcome in
order to get everything syncronized, but it can be
done.

Good morning, everyone.

Don asked:

Because your Disklavier will play MIDI received from an external source, you
can do this. There are various jukebox programs for MIDI, but I am not aware
of a really good one. Someone else on this list may have a better opinion
about that.

Carol mentioned the E-SEQ issue. That issue really only affects your ability
to play E-SEQ files from the computer. Most people who want to play their
Yamaha files (E-SEQ) from a computer use a program for converting E-SEQ to
SMF.

If you hope to play files that require a tone generator for the non-piano
tracks found in many SMFs, you will need to factor that into your setup. The
easiest, most integrated way is to add a DSR1 to your Disklavier. The DSR1
gives you an additional control unit that functions much like the control
unit on a Mark IIXG Disklavier. It also contains all of the GM sounds and a
set of 480 XG sounds. It will also play SMFs directly from floppy disk.

Regards,
PianoBench

Carol & Don

I have an MX88, which I believe has the same operating system as Don's
MX80. Mine will play midi files from my laptop via the MIDI IN port on the
back of the DKV control unit. I use a Mac laptop, but I don't see why that
should change anything. I use ELogic's MicroLogic AV as a sequencer, since
it lets me change midi channels and velocity settings. You are right,
Carol, that the floppy disc drive on the control unit will only play (and
record) ESEQ files, but I record midi files on my laptop via the DKV's MIDI
OUT, thus bypassing the whole problem of ESEQ.

Thank you for reminding me that the MX80 does not have a tone generator, and
that Eseq format is only for using the floppy disk drive. Of course any DKV
will play midi data on channel 1 (and maybe channel 2 as well?) from a
computer.

It seems to me that you would be able to insert a Yamaha Eseq floppy disk
into the DKV, push Play button, and record to a computer using the MIDI Out,
thereby creating a midi file of whatever was on the disk. Then you could
use a Midi Player or Jukebox program to create playlists of the midi files
you made from your Yamaha disks.

I think 3 midi jukebox players work all right. The free one, van Basco's
Karaoke player; Midi Plus 2.17 (shareware by Haris Volos) and Nick
Gravagne's Midi Box Player ($9.95).

The trick to using van Basco's Karaoke player is to click the little note in
the top left corner to access the setup and playlist functions. This
program is available for free download from Spencer Chase's website
