I've recently downloaded several MIDI files. When I tryed playing
them, my Disklavier rejected the disc as "not formatted". When I
format the disc on the Disklavier, my PC won't recocognize the
Diskalvier format and wants to re-format in order to copy the MIDI
files.

I'm working with an MX-80 series Disklavier and my operating system
is Windows XP Professional.

What am I doing wrong?

Your DKV only plays the Yamaha proprietary ESEQ files -
not MIDI files from the floppy disk drive. You need to
convert the MIDI files you download from the internet
to ESEQ files first. The reason your computer does not
see the Disklavier-formatted diskettes is that there is
nothing written on the boot sector.

Your DKV also only uses the older 720k DD disks. In
some posts last month, there were details how to format
a 720k floppy using XP. Some have been successful
using tape to cover the hole on a 1.44 M diskette and
formatting it as a 720k. You could also buy an older
laptop that runs Windows 95 or 98 so you could use the
DOS utilities, like dkvcopy or the Giebler software for
$30, and be able to format at 720k diskette easily.

You only have two options to play MIDI files on the
MX80. 1) convert them to ESEQ format and put them on a
720k dd floppy, or 2) connect a computer to your DKV
via a MIDI interface and play the MIDI files from a
jukebox program like the vanBasco

Bill, are you using double density (DD) disks? If not, your Disklavier is formatting high density (HD) disks as DD because it does not know that there is a difference. Your PC knows that the disk is HD but recognizes the fact that the format is wrong.

Carol, thank you for your very thorough diagnosis of my problem.
I would like to pursue your first recommendation. I have plenty of
the older 720 DD discs. How do I convert the MIDI files to the
proprietary ESEQ files? I have not heard of ESEQ files. Will the
formatting be recognized by both the DKV and my PC? It seems like
I'm getting close, hope you can help.

The Mid2ESEQ program is a Windows-based program in the
dkvutil software found for free in the files section of
this website. Put copies of the MIDI files you want to
convert into a folder and run the Mid2ESEQ program.
You can then put them on a 720kdd floppy using the
Eexplore program that is also part of the dkvutil
software. The resulting floppy disk should be able to
be read by both you computer as well as the DKV.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
