Disklavier Prices

2004-01-27 by yamahaddd2000

Been qouted the following price for a couple of Yamahas.

a. 7'6-C'7 Yamaha Disklavier Ebony Polish Retail $60,000; ours 44,995
b. 5'8 C2 Disklavier Ebony Polish Retail $39,995 ours $29,995
c. 5'3 C1 Disklavier Ebony Polish Retail $36,395 ours $26,995
d. 5'3 DGC1A Mahogany Retail $33,395 ours $24,995
Includes five year warranty on the Disklavier and ten year warranty
on the piano. It also includes delivery, two tunings, and a free
dehumidifier. Does not include sales tax.

Are the prices fair? Is buying a piano like buying a car where I need
to wheel and deal with the sales person? Is there a Kelly Blue book
for piano prices.

I am considering the 5'8" C2 @29.9K, but would like to hear from
other people out there how much they paid for theirs. What kind of
profit margins are piano dealers working with?

Any advise would be appreciated.

I was quoted USD $15,000 for a brand new DGC1A from B&B Music in
British Columbia, Canada (http://www.bbmusic.bc.ca/).

I would highly recommend that you check out the annual
supplement to The Piano Book by Larry Fine. I think
that for those of us who are not in the industry, and
are first time buyers, it gives a nice review on what
a "fair" price is, as well as typical "list" prices
for the different models. The actual book "The Piano
Book" also by Larry Fine is also a great tool for
first-time buyers, runs through all kinds of things
about use and care that a lot of people don't think
about before they buy.

As for what people paid, there is a database on the
Yahoo Groups site that people have put their info on
(I listed my C2 DKV on there, and there are quite a
few others as well.) As you will see, there is quite
a bit of wiggle room on the pricing, depending on
region and whether you are willing to buy from an out
of town dealer or not. Even if you are committed to
buying locally and they won't move on price, there are
lots of extras that you can get them to throw in to
sweeten the deal and make the experience better-
software, additional tunings, lessons, etc. The
dealer I purchased from offered an extremely fair
price without any haggling, and will send a rep to my
house to run through specific features as I start
using them, or when I want to know more things about
the DKV functionality.

Happy shopping (and once you have it, you'll wonder
why you didn't buy it sooner.)

Amanda,

Thanks for your sugestion about the database. Now it has made
shopping more confusing, the prices vary so much for the same model.

Has anyone experienced ordering one of these online or over the phone
from another state. The reason I ask is that I am in Hawaii and there
is only one dealer and it looks like we are being overcharged.

How much would shipping add on to the price and anyone know of a
reputable dealer in their neck of the woods that I might be able to
call.

Thanks,

Hawaii is really in the middle of no where as trucks don't pass by all the time! Shipping costs add enormously to the price!!!!! My guess is that prices that others paid who live on the continent don't even begin to come close to your situation. Because nearly everything in those islands must be shipped in, the cost of living is probably much higher than a state that an interstate highway goes through.

I think that if you are in Hawaii, the prices you were
quoted don't look too bad, considering how cars and
other consumer goods are marked up compared to the
continental US.

Admittedly, I'm a proponent of using local dealers,
but in your situation I would find out how many DKV
trained technicians are in the area and on which
islands.... depending on the situation, it may be
worth it to pay the local price if the dealer is
willing to include the cost of getting his tech back
and forth to where you are.

Thank you to all for providing a wealth of information.

Just to let you know I offered $27K and it was accepted.

I just hope/pray all these people that provided this advise wasn't
actually the dealer from here. Now wouldn't that be a kick in the
pants.

Thanks again.
