Salsa, Clave or Montunos Rhythms

Salsa, Clave or Montunos Rhythms

2005-03-05 by Kim

Hi Everyone, Haven't posted in quite awhile. I have a Mark III
(Full Function). I have just started to take Improvisation Jazz
Piano Lessons and my instructor utilizes Clave and Montunos Rhythms
and actually utilizes a keyboard while we're in class with a Salsa
loop that we accompany. I have been playing with my Mark III with
the voices that are available, actually first time I've ever done
this, quite amazing (obviously not taking full advantage of this
wonderful instrument/machine!). I would however, like to come up
with or see if I can find Clave, Montunos or Salsa loops that I can
play along with. I guess Midi that I can put on a floppy and then
play on my Mark III. Or is there a way to create this on the Mark
III utilizing the voices? Does anyone have anything like this or
know where I can get? It would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Kim

In either case, all the voices in your Mark III tone unit are fully
documented in the yellow manuals. And there are General MIDI voice
assignments in there, If I Recall Correctly. You may need to find
someone with a full function MIDI sequencer who can record your Latin
rhythms, and then render the output to .MID files on a floppy. You'd
then take that to your DKV and try it.

You might also ask your instructor what the origin is of the rhythm
tracks he uses, and see if there's any way to transfer them.. but
unless they adhere to the General MIDI standard, a clave click on his
keyboard won't match the clave click on the mark III. As an example.

There may be some commercially available tracks but I'm not deep
enough into it to know.

best luck

Karl,

Thanks for this info, so sorry I didn't respond sooner, frankly I'm
not even sure I received it, I need to check, but I went to the
Group files and found your response. Yes, I just want percussion.
I've looked at the incredible list of voices available on my Mark
III, but then I have to create it myself and I don't even know how
to begin to do that. I think if someone had such a 'rhythm' on Midi
that I could take to my DSK to play, that would work best, I just
don't know how and where to find such a thing. Any suggestions?
Know anyone with a Midi sequencer? Okay, still hunting.... I
actually bought an Olympus recorder and recorded my last lesson,
which helps, but sound quality is awful to play along with.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

Hi Kim,

Try the MIDI files located here:

    http://media.afromix.org/music/midi/drum_patterns/

You'll need to use some sequencing software like Powertracks Pro or
Cakewalk to loop the clips, but maybe this will get you started.

You can find more files like these by doing a Google search for
"MIDI drum patterns".

Thanks Mark, I'll look into that too.... My instructor had suggested
Protools to loop the track once I found one, thank you for the other
suggestions. I know once I have something that is even close to what he
uses I'll be set. I think I'm going to check out the link for drum patterns
before I invest in a software program, although that might be helpful in the
future should I get better at Jazz Improvisation!

Caution there.. while Digidesign Pro Tools does have some MIDI
sequencing capability, it's an enormously complex - and expensive -
audio editing environment.. people do soundtracks for movies with Pro
Tools. Overkill to the max.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
