sound absorbing baffles

sound absorbing baffles

2005-12-12 by Carol Beigel

After several years of making baffles for Disklavier
grand pianos, I would like to describe the system that
I think works best. It is very simple, and can be
inexpensive. Because sound emanates from both the top
and bottom of the soundboard, it is not enough to just
put foam baffles underneath the piano. The trick is to
use one layer under the lid on top of the strings, and
TWO layers of foam underneath the soundboard. The
sound will not be muffled and you should be able to
carry on a conversation sitting next to the piano.
However, if you want to listen to the piano play with a
greater dynamic range, simply remove the top baffle
which lies on the top of the strings. There is never
any need to remove the bottom baffles.

Usually, upright pianos do not require baffles because
of the way the "soft" pedal works, but one sheet would
cover the outside back of the soundboard between the
beams. Use two layers. Never put foam on the inside of
an upright piano!

First, use the special pour acoustic foam from
Markertek in New York (www.markertek.com). It is sold
in sheets 52" by 52". You need two sheets - one for
the top and one for the bottom of the soundboard of a
grand piano. The thinner sheets work fine. This foam
is made for its sound absorbing properties even though
it looks like any ordinary "egg crate" foam.

For the top "blanket", close the lid on the grand piano
and make a pattern out of brown packaging paper cut to
the size of the lid, but about 1 inch smaller on the
straight side to fit inside the rim. This blanket is
cut in one piece and lies inside the lid when the piano
is closed. It can be cut out either nubby side up or
down on the foam sheet since it lays on top of the
plate and doesn't contact the strings. Just make sure
it stops before contacting the dampers. You can easily
remove this piece when you want to play your unmuffled
piano with the lid open.

For bottom baffles, make patterns of the various
compartments between the beams on the underside of the
piano. I find it easier to use the stiff brown
wrapping paper, hold it up to the piano, and use a
piece of chalk to mark a crease where I want to make a
cut. Place the patterns on the smooth side of the foam
and cut them slightly larger so they will stay in place
just by stuffing them against the soundboard. Use a
long razor blade knife to cut the foam. You can use
smaller scrap pieces for the layer against the
soundboard, and your fitted pieces underneath them to
hold them in. Leave plenty of room around the
amplifier which needs air.

None of the measurements needs to be exact as no one
ever sees the baffles. All you really want to do is
capture as much sound as you can coming from the
piano - not stop it altogether.

I have had 100% success using this method.

A better foam product from a company that specializes in acoustic
treatment is

  http://auralex.com/

There's more to treating an acoustic space than putting absorption ON
your instrument. The area around it is more important. Do you have
glass or ceramic tile in your room? Parallel walls? High ceiling with
right angle corners?

Putting a bunch of MarkerFoam (which is actually a very mediocre
product - I have used it for a studio installation a few years ago -
and unless they've re-designed the formulation, it's nowhere near as
good as some newer generation foam products) on your instrument will
accomplish one thing- it will ruin the sound of your instrument. The
goal is to have your instrument sound great, but not overwhelm the
room that it's in.

I suggest reading up on some acoustic treatment -- it is NOT your
piano that's the problem. It's the room that it's in.

I figure anyone who wants to carry on a conversation
while their piano is playing in the same room while
they eat dinner or visit with their friends is really
not interested in the best acoustic room arrangements
or the greatest dynamic range they can achieve with
their pianos. Most people who want to do this cannot
use their Disklaviers in this way without the foam
baffles. Often, they don't want to cover those fancy
tile or hardwood floors or have the decor of the rooms
affected. I stand by my original post as an
inexpensive and very effective way to tone down
acoustic pianos for the great variety of reasons people
have presented to me over the years. This is a home
remedy - not a studio solution. As with anything, you
can always find a more expensive and complicated way to
do the job!

Carol -

Have you had an opportunity to install this kind of a baffle system
on a Mark IV?

Crawling under mine, it doesn't look like it would be all that
simple - the underside of the piano is really broken up with all the
electronics, speakers etc. There must be at least 20 seperate
locations where the foam would have to be cut and fit into place.

I have used this system on everything but the Mark IV.
I would definitely make the piece for the top inside
the lid. As for the underside, you should still be
able to install at least one layer between the
soundboard and the various devices.

I would also suggest that you have your Disklavier tech
check each note and make sure the ppp value is set as
low as possible.

Re: [disklavier] sound absorbing baffles

My biggest gripe with my MX100 XG II has been volume. I finally bought a
blanket to hang on the wall behind it. It muffles it horribly. At least
it matches the decor of the room. I was going to try accoustic ceiling
tiles that are used in t-bar ceilings but have not since I expect it to
still sound muffled. When I take down the blanket, the piano jumps to
life. Too bad it is sooooo loud.
Home Depot has accoustic panels in 2 x 4 (ceiling tiles in the floor and
wall dept) and 4 x 8 (sound insulation next to the wall thermal
insulation) They are cheap enough for a test.

If anybody finds or comes up with a program to convert existing files to
lower velocity, I would be very interested.

Mark in Idaho

btw My only other gripe is the lack of music selection to play. My
preference is along the style of Lorie Line. She is a Yamaha Artist but
has not plans to record on a Disklavier. I don't care what any
audiophile says. An acoustic piano will alwayssound better that the best
audio recording.

Greetings Mark,

I have a program that several Disklavier owners use to modify the
velocity in MIDI files. It will process batches of files unattended.
It only works on MIDI files so you would have to convert to MIDI if
the files are of a different type. http://www.spencerserolls.com/MidiMod/MidiMod2.zip

Re: [disklavier] sound absorbing baffles

2005-12-15 by Tim Meyer MD

I tried a blanket on top of the piano temporarily to absorb the unwanted
volume.
The next day, my piano sounded horribly dissonant.
To my dismay, a mouse had crawled up a blanket corner near the floor,
entered the piano's interior and pulled damper felt from about 20 keys
to build a nest overnight!

The blanket idea turned into a $300 mistake.

Re: [disklavier] sound absorbing baffles

2005-12-15 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

Tim, your story reminds me of a similar mishap that resulted in one of the world's more serene musical compositions.

On Christmas eve in 1818, it was discovered that mice apparently ate holes in the leather chests of a church pipe organ in the village of Oberndorf, Austria rendering the instrument useless. The assistant pastor, Joseph Mohr, was determined that the lack of organ music was not going to spoil his service, and he quickly composed the words to Silent Night. He then gave those words to schoolmaster and church organist, Franz Gruber, who set the words for two solo voices, chorus, and guitar. The new Christmas work was premiered that evening.

I think that we should have a special place in our hearts (but not in our Disklaviers!) for mice.

still sound muffled.

If anybody finds or comes up with a program to convert existing files to
lower velocity, I would be very interested.

btw My only other gripe is the lack of music selection to play. My
preference is along the style of Lorie Line. She is a Yamaha Artist but
has not plans to record on a Disklavier. I don't care what any
audiophile says. An acoustic piano will alwayssound better that the best
audio recording.

RE: [disklavier] sound absorbing baffles

Hi Mark,

Could you not use a midi editor program such as cakewalk or similar to reduce the velocity of the keys, or were you referring to the disklavier format files?

Regards

Mark

I tried a blanket on top of the piano temporarily to absorb the unwanted volume.
The next day, my piano sounded horribly dissonant.
To my dismay, a mouse had crawled up a blanket corner near the floor, entered the piano's interior and pulled damper felt from about 20 keys to build a nest overnight!

has not plans to record on a Disklavier. I don't care what any
audiophile says. An acoustic piano will alwayssound better that the best
audio recording.

Re: [disklavier] sound absorbing baffles

2005-12-15 by Mark

I am interested in lowering the volume of the Disklavier format files. I
have expensive Pianosoft disks that are just too loud. I have an
auditory processing deficit due to a brain injury. One of the
manifestations is my brain over-reacts to excessive volume. The
technical term is adrenal-cortical hyperfunction. I use the right music
as therapy. That is why I like Lorie Line. Her presentations have a
soothing flow to them.
