Need help with Disklavier Mk III gone mute

Need help with Disklavier Mk III gone mute

2007-02-24 by Bob Coate

My Disklavier Mk III has suddenly gone mute, on all instrumental
accompaniment playbacks. If I'm playing a Yamaha PianoSoft Plus
diskette, the piano still plays fine acoustically -- but no other
instrumentation plays at all through the speakers, it just stays
silent. I know that the speakers are OK, because I can switch the
piano to Silent Mode and the synthesized piano voice then plays fine
through the speakers (but still no other instruments).

Strangely, if I try to play a standard MIDI file, not only is the
MIDI instrumentation totally silent, but in this case the piano will
not even play acoustically!

Also, if I try to play just a regular audio CD, which normally would
work, there is no sound at all from the speakers.

Given that my local dealer has a minimum two-month (!) wait for
service appointments (which I consider totally unacceptable), can
anyone suggest any troubleshooting or diagnostic steps that I can
take in the meantime?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ick... You might try calling your piano tuner. There are a few
of them out there that are knowledgeable on the units failure modes.
Carol for example (Hi!)

I'll take a look when I get home and see if I can come up with some
configuration mode that would cause the partial failure you are seeing.
You did crawl up behind the control unit and made sure all th
interconnections are well seated?

Try a couple of things:
1) do a reset
2) unplug the piano from the wall and shut it down.
Wait a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
3)try the above first. If still mute, crawl under the
piano and make sure that a child, dog or vacuum cleaner
did not:
unplug the wires to the amplifier
the amplifier volume is set high enough

Re: [disklavier] Need help with Disklavier Mk III gone mute

Hi Bob,

Are you getting any error messages at all? This sounds like a problem with your tone generator, the module that makes MIDI (synthesized) sounds for ensemble playback. It makes sense that it wouldn't affect the piano voice, since it operates independent of the GM and XG voices. I'm not sure what to think of the fact that CDs don't play, however, since that wouldn't be related to your tone generator, and since your speakers are working. I suppose it is possible that you have the L/R balance off or you have accidentally set the piano/ensemble balance so that you can't hear anything but the piano. If you have checked these things (and even if you haven't, I guess), the easiest thing to do is reset the factory defaults. In my experience, this fixes odd behaviors from the Mark II or III. I don't have a Mark III anymore, but to the best of my memory, you press function, then the ">" (right arrow) button, and you'll get some RESET options at the very end of the menu. Try choosing to reset "Setup" first, as the other options erase the storage memory and probably aren't related to your problem anyway. Let us know if this works

Hi Bob,

I don't know if this will help, but it certainly couldn't hurt. Have you
tried resetting the control unit back to default settings ?

"The details are in Chapter 12 of the Advanced Owners Manual on page 72.
Basically, you push Function, then Reset, then Settings to do a Reset.
Leave the menus for the Memory Disks alone"

Good luck,

Michael

Re: Need help with Disklavier Mk III gone mute - reset worked!

2007-02-24 by Bob Coate

Hi Michael,

The reset of the control unit back to default settings worked! I
was unaware of this procedure, thank you to you and to everyone else
who brought it to my attention. Everything is back to normal
playback now.

Hi Shana,

The reset of "Setup" worked, everything is back to normal now.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, my piano tuner is from the local dealer and is also
the service technician for whom I would need to wait two months to
see. Fortunately, the suggestions to try a Reset worked, and the
problem is solved.
