Wagon Grand maintenance mode technical question

Wagon Grand maintenance mode technical question

2007-03-07 by Colin

Hi all,

I am new to the group and this is my first post. I have a pretty
high level of technical skill when it comes to piano action work,
tuning and voicing, but I am new to Disklaviers.

I have a 1990 C-3 Wagon grand from japan that I picked up very
inexpensively and after having done a little regulation work (very
minor did'nt need much even though its 17 years old! Go Yamaha!) and
some voicing (was a bit bright, now sounds like a mason and
hamlin) , I would like to run the automatic calibration on the
disklavier unit as I am sure it hasnt been done in a long time.

What is the sequence to get the unit to "boot" in to maintenance
mode?

The menus are in Kanji, but I have a close family friend that is
japanese to translate so I should be able to get through it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-C

Hi,

to get into the maintenance mode, hold down both SONG SELECT buttons ( |<< & >>| ) while powering up.

Press (+) 5 times to get to "KEYBOARD MEASUREMENT".

Press "PLAY/PAUSE". It should say "ARE YOU SURE?

Press "PLAY/PAUSE" again.

The piano will start playing by itself. While it does so (15-20 mins), don't touch the keys, whatever you do. It will then calculate the piano tables. Once it is finished, it will come up with "OK" (if you're lucky) or it will show "PASSxxx)", which indicates that there is a problem with one or more keys (xxx indicates the key number).

You can compensate for individual keys by following the above procedure, but only press the (+) button twice to go to "KEYBOARD ADJUSTMENT". The piano will then start playing a chromatic scale. When it gets to the note which is causing problems, press the "PLAY/PAUSE" button. You can then use the "R" button and the "L" button respectively to increase or decrease the velocity.

If you find that the pass numbers indicate a continous range of keys, rather than individual ones, you may need to physically adjust the sensor rails. At this stage, it might be best to get the service manual and the maintenance manual to give you mor details, or call your local Yamaha service/tech support department.

Compared to later Disklavier models, you have picked the most difficult model as an introduction to the Disklavier. However, if the regulation is up to scratch, it is possible to get these pianos working OK, it's just a bit fiddley and time consuming.

On another note, if you have electronic problems with the original (Wagon Grand) disklaviers, Yamaha in Japan are getting to the point where electronic spares are no longer available (this series was discontinued in 1992)

Hello

I live in Melbourne and the only chap I know who dables with Disklaviers is Barry Nottingham , Try 0407927718. He is a Piano tech but I guessyou can ask him

There is a chap by the name of Ted Ramus and is in Melbourne. I am sure you can ask him and he will put you in touch with a chap in Sydney. ted's no is 0418 541819. Heis ex-Yamaha and even Yamahastill consult him.He once fixed my HS8.

Second option isto contact Joseph Pentacoso at Yamaha Melbourne who I believe is in the repair and service. Just use the white pages to find Yamaha Melbourne no and he would help you.

What type of Piano is it that needs your attention? What is wrong with it? If it is a small menu problem I may be able to refer to my reapir manual as well.

Good luck and all the very best.

Budd

2007-03-26 by Peter Wesley

Thanks Budd, I'll give them a call.

It's an HQ100SXG, originally from Japan. I think it's the equivalent of
a MPX100 XG - at least it's compatible with the Mark II XG firmware.

I am pretty sure it is an electronics problem. On silent mode or midi
out, C5 works fine on power-up, but stops firing after a minute or so.
If I turn it off for an hour or so it works again for a bit. Has anyone
else had this kind of problem?

Cheers,

Peter

RE: [disklavier] Disklavier Tech in Sydney?

2007-03-26 by Buddhika Wije

Hi,

Yes it looks like an open circuit problem , may be when it gets hot. It looks like it could be in the controler as it happens only if you use the Midi side of things and in silent mode you also will be using the internal sound card. I guess in normal play back it works well.

Barry Nottingham deals with secondhand pianos and Disklaviers in Sydney. i have visited his place in 2001when I was thinking of getting adisklavier. He is a nice chap andI think he may be able to put you in touch with a good tech.I have the reapir manual for most models and I will check to see if this problemis listed and whetherany error codes are listed.

Good luck

Sorry for coming in a bit late on a reply. I'm catching up on the
changes and will be subscribing to the new Google group.
I've got a couple of people you could try. I been using Greg
Chamberlain to tune my DKS. Ph: 02-9679 9332 or Mobile : 0414 461
716. He's had training with Yamaha and he's been tuning my MX95. I
haven't had to put him to the test as my Piano has been trouble
free. The othe person who I know is very experienced in disklaviers
as he had their agency in NSW for quite a while is the owner of "
Theme and Variations" , I can't think of his name, ( I think Ara is
his name, he's the owner and does all the Piano Tech work for the
Con) ) Their showroom is at St.Leonards, on the Pacific Hwy between
Greenwich Rd and Bellevue Ave. These are the people I purchased my
Disklavier from a few years ago and Ara knows his stuff. He lost
the Agency from Yamaha when he ran with Steinberg the opposition.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.
Stafford

I have not had such a problem. It looks like a problem in the control box with Midi and XG side of things. Could be a dry contact. When the metal contacts in the circuit board expand with operational heat it may open up a contactsome where or even happen within a IC.

Try your Sydney Tech.
