How to Record from a Mark IV

How to Record from a Mark IV

2007-09-18 by robjohan

Hopefully someone out there can give us some help on this question ...
we have a 6 month old Mark IV running 2.0 software and we want to
record a piano piece that my daughter's accompanist recorded onto our
piano's hard drive and burn the recording onto a CD so that we can use
the CD in a regular CD player to accpmpany my daughter at a vocal
audition. Is the only way to do this is to use a tape recorder or a PC
with a micropuone and place it in the room with the piano and then
record the piano playing the song we need?
Thanks

The easiest way is to take the MIDI recording your Disklavier made and run
it through your computer software. In Pro Audio Tracks (www.pgmusic.com )
it is called "rendering" the MIDI file to digital audio file. The audio will
be whatever sounds came with the soundcard on your computer. This audio
file can then be burnt to a CD.

I like to take the MIDI files and take them through a virtual piano (VST
software that is installed on the computer) to get a fantastic audio
sounding piano. These are not cheap but sound great. I use the Steinberg
Grand I and Grand II VST pianos.

Another way is to take audio cables from the audio out on the DKV (setting
the DKV so the keyboard sounds are coming out the piano) into a digital
audio converter box (I use an Eideral UA25) to make the audio file. Try
taking the audio sound of the piano off the headphone jack for an even
better sound.

You should also have some audio editing software. I am using an older
version of Cool Edit, but I believe the newer Nero7 software suite also has
an audio editor. I believe PG music's Pro Audio Tracks also has both a MIDI
and an audio editor. It is also a great price!

Thanks Carol for your reply. But, how do I get the MIDI file
transferred from teh piano's hard disk to my PC?

Copy the song to the floppy disk drive in the DKV.

Re: How to Record from a Mark IV

2007-09-18 by jheitzeb1

I haven't done this to verify it, but it seems that if you have a Mark IV that you have
wireless capability to transfer files To and From your Mark IV to your hard drive on your
PC.

I have transferred midi files from my PC (Mac) to the Disklavier Mark IV using the To/From
PC option. I have not transferred the midi files back to my Mac (PC), but you should be
able to do this. If you don't have a floppy drive on your PC to use, this would be a
reasonable solution to transferring that midi file that you recorded.

It also seems reasonable to use iTunes either for the Mac or PC depending on the
computer you have to burn a CD of this midi. You can move the midi into iTunes. Make a
playlist and then burn the CD from iTunes. Be sure to make it an 'audio CD' when you
burn it so that it will be playable in ordinary CD players.

I have not verified that the midi does convert to audio using iTunes, but it seems that if
you can import it into iTunes that you could do so.

Hope this doesn't confuse the issue, but these thoughts occurred to me and since the
ability to transfer midi via WIFI exists on your Mark IV, why not use it instead of using
floppy drive.

Also, why buy another program if iTunes is free and available on the Mac and PC. Worth
trying as CD's are cheap these days and you could easily test to see if it works. If I get
time I will test this theory and make a CD of some of my midis and burn a CD to play thru
a CD player. I will post the results when I get the chance.

Re: [disklavier] Re: How to Record from a Mark IV

2007-09-18 by George F. Litterst

Good afternoon, everyone.

Transfering files on a Mark IV using FromToPC is a great option.

iTunes will open MIDI files on both platforms. However, using iTunes to convert a MIDI file to audio is not a great solution. iTunes uses the weak piano sound in the QuickTime GM Synth, and that sound does not understand incremental pedaling. So, in some cases, the playback may sound rather muddy.

iTunes does a nice job of taking audio files, letting you create a playlist, and then burning an audio CD.

PianoBench
