Mark IV Voice Problem

Mark IV Voice Problem

2008-08-18 by Joan Heitzeberg (Conahan)

I have taken time to review all the past documentations, that came
with the Mark IV and each of the updates. I believe that my husband
was thinking that he could change the voice of a particular song (one
that was already recorded) to be something other than the piano. He
was trying to change the voice of a piano only type midi file.

I was thinking that the voice is applicable to ensemble tracks and
also related to playing the piano or recording using the voice option.

There may very well be no problem that exists with Version 3.0
concerning this voice option, it may merely be our lack of
understanding on how the voice option is used.

Thanks for all the feedback on this matter.

Joan,

I still think that what your husband was trying to do is, in fact, possible...but you don't use the "voice" button to do it. From memory (which might be fuzzy since I haven't done this in a while, and I'm not home to test this...) I think you go to the "Ensemble", chose the MIDI channel (probably 0) that the piano is on, and select a new voice for it. I'm not certain that I've ever done that for a piano solo, but I've certainly done it to some jazz tracks to replace the type of bass guitar was being used during playback.

Greetings Kevin and Joan,

I think that Joan said that this was a MIDI file that was being played. Another option (especially if you can't do it from the DKV) is to change the voice (patch or instrument definition) in the MIDI file. You can do this in Cakewalk and other sequencing programs.

If you have the piano playing from a computer, you can also send a patch message from it. I have a program that I wrote, which seems to work although it is a little confusing. You can send patch and bank select messages on any channel. Of course, you would have to know on what channel you want to change the voice or you could just fiddle until you get it right. I am interested in knowing if this program works so would like feedback from anyone willing to try it.

I can also write a program to change the patch in the MIDI file but again, you would need to know what channel to change it on or at least know what instrument you want to change from/to. This visual display in Cakewalk's track view makes it much easier to do this sort of thing. It is a little difficult to do "blind".

Yes, Kevin, I did step through this same procedure with my husband.
The ensemble option allows you to choose the tracks that are not piano
to different voices. The problem that we were having is that most of
our music is piano only in nature. But did have a few songs that we
could experiment with this option.

I will have to check the suggestion of that we can select the piano
channel and assign a new voice to it. Not sure if that is doable, but
maybe what my husband may be wanting to do in the playback mode.

Thanks,
Joan
