Mark III to Mark IV

Mark III to Mark IV

2008-10-12 by bbfromca

I have a Mark III series piano and wondered if it was possible to
purchase a Mark IV control unit and swap it out for the Mark III
control unit?
I like the Wi-Fi feature of the new models.

Hey there,

Unfortunately Yamaha have not produced such a unit. You must sell your
existing piano and buy a new one in order to upgrade to Mark IV
capabilities. You could try using a laptop/pc and/or PDA with some midi
player software to get some of the functionality (there are similar
posts to this in the archives if you want to search for details), but
this still wont give you access to the Disklavier Radio and other features.

At this time there is no upgrade path from a Mark III to a Mark IV. At
various times in the past, Yamaha has provided upgrade options, but
there has been no announcement of such an upgrade from pre-Mark IV to
Mark IV. That does not rule such an upgrade out in the future, however.

It is worth noting that there are substantial architectural
differences between Mark IVs and all previous models. The biggest
difference as far as user features are concerned is that the Mark IV
relies on an embedded Linux computer.

Many people on this list have added some of the Mark IV conveniences
to their pre-Mark IV Disklaviers by adding a personal computer to
their instrument.

You can not do this. Yamaha needs to come out with a replacement
control box for the Mark III pianos. You would swap out your current
control box for the new version. It would have a hard disk, wireless,
USB, etc. It could drive the piano in the same way that the current
Mark III control box does. They could use this new box for old Mark
III owners as well as even current pianos that still have the Mark III
control box. No word from Yamaha on any of this....

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
