DKC-850 in the UK

DKC-850 in the UK

2011-01-30 by James Fry

Hello all,

Does anyone know of a retailer in the UK that stocks / sells the DKC-850, and what its RRP and typical street price is?

Many thanks

James

Any Yamaha Disklavier Dealer should be able to get hold of one for you. You're probably looking at something like £1000-£1200.

Bear in mind that, on pre-Mark IIXG models, not all DKC850 functions are available.

Hi athomik,
Thanks for the reply. I have a MarkIIXG (MPX1Z) so I'm fine with the functionality.
The reason I asked is that on Saturday I visited the dealer I purchased my piano from, Chappel of Bond Street, London (who are now on Waldour Street). I was told that it isn't worth their while dealing with upgrades such as the DKC850, and as an example I am the first person that has approached them about it. They seemed more than happy to sell new disklaviers though - there is no way I will ever purchase anything from them again, even sheet music.
The only other disklavier dealer I know of is Mickelburgh - hopefully they haven't gone the same way!
Failing that, do Yamaha sell direct to end users these days?
Regards,
James

Hi James

For what it's worth, I have a MkIIXG as well, and have been thinking of upgrading for some time now. Most authorised Yamaha dealers in Australia - and I live in Sydney - won't carry the item and referred me to Yamaha Australia (which is not a Yamaha company I understand, but a distributorship). Their price is AUD2,990. This doesn't compare well with US prices, which appear about USD1,600. Even if I allow for shipping and tax, it would be much cheaper to import one from the USA - I estimate it will cost less than AUD2,000. Not keen on Yamaha's pricing and support in the antipodes.

Regards
Ken

I'm not sure exactly how it works in Australia, but Yamaha Australia (a bona fide subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation of Japan) would quote the official Yamaha price (in the UK it used to be called "Recommended Retail Price" - RRP). It's up to individual dealers to work out what price they are willing to sell a product for (within certain constraints). See if you can locate an authorised Disklavier dealer and see what price they could get it for (being quite new and a bit of a specialist product, it's not surprising that few dealers have them stock - but they should be able to order one for you)

I wasn't expecting to find anywhere with it in stock, but I did expect to be quoted a price and an approximate lead time. I certainly did not expect to be told to go elsewhere - especially as when I bought the piano they bragged about their aftersales service and the history of updates to the system!
Mickelburgh are attempting to find out if they can obtain a unit for me. I've since found a Japanese site that will ship one to me in the UK for approximately 700 pounds. I am expecting the official price in the UK to be closer to three times that!

The official UK Suggested Retail Price is £1299 (bear in mind the comments regarding SRP and actual shop prices mentioned below). Lead times can be difficult to predict as they seem to be flying out of the door as soon as they come into the UK.
