Mark4 Jumping to Synth after a while

Mark4 Jumping to Synth after a while

2011-01-21 by Phil Blah

Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had this little bug or something with their Mark4.
I have a playlist with a mix of about 60 songs, they all play fine but about mid
way I suppose, a song will play and it will start with the proper piano, it
might play a few notes then it stops and plays it on the Synth piano or it just
starts with the Synth. It can do it on a stable songs for example "Sue
Downs/Yamaha song" that never gives me trouble normally, but it might even be
any other midi song. The next song might be fine but the one after then plays
back on the Synth.

On the PDA I can easily click next a few times, the Channels 1 and 2 are # or
they might even be forced from me before to 01, if I just toggle it from # to 01
it then starts to play on the piano, but next time it might not.. or it can be
on 01 already and I have to toggle to # then back to 01.

So my only 'theory' is some weird residual midi data is hanging around from
another song. So I need some sort of soft reset midi file, similar to the Panic
Button on Cakewalk (rather than a whole shut down of the piano).

Any one else have this problem or have any ideas?

Thanks for your time,

Philip

It sounds like you might have some stray patch (instrument definitions)
somewhere in the files? Once sent to the piano, these will stay active
until another patch is sent for the same channel. On the following page,
you can find a program called "listmidievents to log" or something like
that. You can look at all the events in the file and see if there are
patches. Best to run the program without displaying note or pedal data
to make it easier to see things like patches etc.

Hello Spencer,

Thanks for your reply, I am also getting another strange thing the Sustain pedal
just stopped working but the left pedal still plays, once I restarted the piano
all runs again. So I suspect that it's a stray patch as you said, is there a way
to 'rest all' between songs or do you have or know of a midi file that just
resets everything?

This is important to me because I am not just playing a few songs here and there
at home, the piano is in my restaurant and I have a huge playlist that keeps
playing, most songs are ones we purchased from Yamaha so you would expect them
to be clean and tidy but there are other random midis.

Also, has anyone noticed that if you play an normal audio file (wav) with or
with out piano data if you have the pitch adjust to +1 the volume wavers around
you can hear this from a distance really clear plus it has some sort of poor
quality compression whirl, but if you take off the pitch adjust, to its default
0 you can hear the difference immediately. Obviously I use pitch adjust because
all pianos are always going to be a few cents +/- and I like to have it
perfectly matched.

Cheers,

Philip
