Dotcom VCA Repair

2004-10-14 by NYMOs

Hi there,

<Stoopid question alert> ( I'm not a technician)

Told you I was stoopid.... its actually a 109 !!!!

I have been having trouble with the gate output female jack on one of the
Q109 EG's.

I opened it up and the recepticle that the jack male inserts into and
connects with has broken.
(Hope you know which bit I'm talking about !)

Question is ..I'll get someone to de-solder the two connections... but do I
use a stereo or mono replacement ??..somebody said a stereo one was more
stable ??.

Also.. are there different qualities ??...any recommendations ??

Cheers

Well, either one will work. But it's not necessary to use a stereo jack. I
think Roger sells a drop in replacement for cheap. If its still under
warranty it should be a free replacement...

No reason to use stereo. Us a standard mono 1/4" jack

The industry standard quality jack is the Switchcraft 112a. They are
only about $1.25. However, it will have a different feel that the
open frame jacks in the dot com. So, you probably may want to go
with the generic Chinese replacement sold at many retail outlets for
twice the price of the good jack.

Is there any reason to get the 112a instead of the 111 where a n/c switch
isn't required? (hey, 2 cents is 2 cents ;-).

BTW, if you are reformatting...go ahead and spend the extra money on
Switchcraft jacks. I'm in the process of replacing all of the cheap ones on
my DotCom. There IS a difference!

(who has about 30 lbs of original Moog NOS stainless steel lockwashers for
these jacks...)

Good question Jay. I guess since I tend to use the switch for a few
things, the only advantage is only having one type. Also , I have
noticed that you have to shop price each time you buy these. I
usually get 250 at a time. You can save quite a bit by shopping that
quantity as they seem to fluctuate from the various normal suppliers.

Yes. I agree. I use 100% Switchcraft.

Ahh, I thought there was a small price difference too. But one distributor
had the 112a's priced cheaper!

BTW, for those wanting an exact match to what Roger uses, the part number is
16PJ022 at Mouser.com. Looks like the company that made them was bought out
recently, and the prices went up by about 30%...
