blank panels = too !@#$%^& expen$ive!

This is nuts! At $12-20 each I think I'm going to look into getting
some made up here locally. Maybe some nice 3/32" aluminum with holes
to fit dotcom and/or motm. With just plain old satin FLAT BLACK finish.

Shouldn't cost more than $5 apiece - maybe I'll offer them for $7

 grumble..grumble..;)

Hi Erik,
Where are you? In the US, I think DotCom is not making much money off blanks. I hardly make anything off my MOTM blanks, and they are simpler as far as mechanics (no bends or cuts) and paint (no taping off). Even then, you probably won't get them for cheaper unless you order 20 or more of a certain size. And if you do find a metal/ paint place that does it for real cheap... let me know! : )
Amazingly, I bought a panel bin from Ikea for $40, and whilst assembling it, realized it would cost over $400 from a local assembly shop. But made in China, at a quantity of a kajillion... somehow they pull it off.
It's funny, since I've been making stuff, I no longer think MOTM is expensive, and I think DotCom is a steal (though those cheap jacks throw me off)!
Cheers,
Scott

OMG! Alright, so the pricing strategy is designed to..uhh..(I'm
trying to remember what my old econ Prof told me..) Oh yeah, it's:

"..designed to encourage the perception of vertical product
differentiation in a given marketplace, such that your product
is seen as being of the highest quality available; and hence
worthy of a price much higher than that of your competition."

 Ok I got it..GOURMET SYNTHESIZERS! ;)

Cheers!

Hi'ya Mark! Is that an order I hear? :) How many did you want?

Actually I'm deep in the process of working out some wrinkles
in the design of an affordable <very-expensive-module> right
now..perhaps after the 25th I'll be putting together a group-buy
on some blanks, if there is significant interest.

The guy here in Los Angeles claims he can get me 1w blanks at
about $5 if I order 100 or so at a time. So probably it would call
for a sign-up and such; much like Jan is doing for the Wogglebug pc
boards. Price + s/h <something-formula> = final cost. And I think
PayPal might be a good option. I'll only do this if it's a real
cost saver.

Meantime, if YOU find a better price on em, please keep me in mind.

 Cheers!

I was kind of hoping you'd do all the work. <g>

Well, they *are* nice blank panels. ;-) If you've got to have blank
panels, that is. And if you like the old R.A.Moog look.

I would guess that the pricing strategy is designed to make it worth
Eric's time to make and sell them.

The smaller the volume, the higher the unit cost. Wouldn't be nice if
modules were as cheap like mass-produced consumer electronics?
