Analog Mixing Boards

Analog Mixing Boards

2008-05-28 by phineousbonemachine

So I am on musicians fiend looking at mixers to use with my MX400
when it dawned upon me' "Hey there is an old 16 track master sumthing
up in my attic!!"

So after spending a hour of painstakingly making my way thru the
jungle that is my attic...I see it in the sunlight no less, covered
in a an old sheet.

Wrastling it down the creaky ladder by my self was no easy task.

It is an old Studiomaster 16-4-2 from the mid to late 80's with 5knob
sweep british EQ's....=)

It matches my DotCom!!!!! nice dark stained wood sides 3 auxsends...=)

I bought it in the early 90's at a pawn shop for $200bucks to run a
small punkclubs PA.........it was never used in the club and lived in
my parents attic for 8years till I moved up here to the NW in
2000....and even then it was one of those, "Just put that damned
thing back in the attic" well here it is 08 and i have had it 16yrs
and only checked it out for a couple of hours back in the club.

I must say I love it... lots of routing set ups, its a abit large but
VERY musical. real warm, it does need to be cleaned....but sounds
great for 16 years in an attic.

Maybe its just me but it makes me smile....yeah I can go buy a nice
compact rackable mixer in a nice flight case.........but this has
charm and presence, and now a new home.

LOL

anyone else have a big old analog mixer that they use?

It's funny, my first reaction was, 'I wish I could get an old mixer, but I just don't have the space'. Currently I'm using a MOTU 828mkII instead of a mixer. I also have a couple hundred vinyl LP's stored and 'no space' to put a turntable. My point is that I think our 'spacial' priorities change drastically as technology changes. I use a laptop because of it's convenient size, use iTunes instead of a CD player etc.... . Funny how I can still make space for my Synergy II+ :)

Don't forget the dotcom modular... those things aren't
precisely small.

I have two Mackie 1202 VLZ (12-channel compact mixers)
myself, linked (along with my soundcard's output) with
a Mackie MixerMixer (those things are genious). I have
my studio divided in two sets, with one mixer each. In
one of them, I have the dotcom, ESQ-1, Korg ES-1, and
my new Mochika synth/sequencer. The other set has the
Nord G2, Waldorf XT, Korg MS2000R, Korg ER-1, Emu
MP-7, and Boss DR-770. I usually work on one set or
the other, but thanks to the mixermixer I can easily
use gear on both sets and/or softsynths.

Howdy,

YEP! I've got a Roland 24 channel line mixer into a 16 channel
Peavey Mark II into a 16 channel Peavey Mark IV into a Berhringer 32
channel 3282, into a Roland VS2480CD. I just need to learn how to use
the VS. But I've got a Fostex B-16 reel to reel for recording until I
do learn it.

Yes I love my big-ol analog mixer I use. I just wish it were a studio mixer and not a live board. Its an old 24 track yamaha with a sweepable EQ. Sounds great when you overdrive them inputs, cool distorion. The stereo bus is really noisey though : (
