can you switch patterns "live" whilst in play mode?

can you switch patterns "live" whilst in play mode?

2004-12-13 by shekharaugust1973

that's a simple enough question isnt it?

you can on the rm1x, rs7000 et al

the real beauty on the rm1x is that you dont even have to wait for
the bar/measure to end...patters are switched the minute you press
the button?

also, patterns on it are arranged from a to p horizontally across the
bottom of the keyboard. on the MnM how do you switch patterns? is it
via the keyboard itself?

cheers and thanks in advance

RS7000 & MachineDrum owner here..

Fire me some questions at:

redstar96 AT hotmail

I'll do my best to answer...

(Sorry, very late at night here and I'm about to crash)

Actually, I'm curious, too. I have an SFX-60 and RS7000. Maybe you
guys can keep it on the list?

[elektron] Re: can you switch patterns "live" whilst in play mode?

2005-01-21 by crvenazvezda91

I'm still awake.... thank god for coffee huh?

Note: Don't have a SFX-60, so not too sure...

For live use, the RS7000 is the master sequencer and I have my
MachineDrum set up in "Global" (I use 7 for RS7 :P)

Go into: Global -> Midi -> Map Editor

I have mine set up as:

Track:
01-BD = C -2 (Lowest key availble)
02-SD = C# -2
03-HT = D -2
etc etc

Then I have:

Pattern A 01 = E -1
Pattern A 02 = F -1
Pattern A 03 = F# -1
Pattern A 04 = G -1

etc etc

This allows me to either trigger the individual sounds from the RS7000
/ midi note.

(Downside is there is only 128 midi notes available, to cover 16 drum
hits & 128 patterns.... so I sacrifice patterns H01 to H16)

I want to have the Bass Drum? Midi Note = C -2

It also allows me to trigger the patterns as well.

I want to play Pattern A 04? Midi Note = G -1
(I just a single hit to turn on)

This will play the MachineDrum pattern from beginning to end.
(Regardless of length of pattern, unless it receives a new note on
message to trigger a new pattern)

So for a 4 bar loop I'll have:

001-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)
002-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)
003-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)
004-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)

(Note that I'm retriggering the pattern at the beginning of each bar)

Q: But what if I have a 32 step pattern? What if I have a roll in the
2nd half of the pattern?

A: Easy, you trigger at the beginning of each pattern for when you
DON'T want the roll, leave it running when you do:

001-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04, 16 steps)
002-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04, 16 steps)
003-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04, 32 steps)

(Note that I'm retriggering the pattern at the beginning of bar 1, 2 &
3; this will cutoff/reset the previous pattern)

At 003-000 I'm triggering the pattern again, but I am NOT interupting
at all (at 004-000) so it will play for the full 32 steps (2 bars)

From an RS7000 / RM1x perspective you can also do what I do:

001-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)
002-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)
003-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)

003-240 Physically mute the channel on the RS7000

xxx 004-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04)

004-240 Physically un-mute the channel on the RS7000

Note: As I've muted the channel on the RS7000 at 003-240 it will not
send out a new trigger at 004-001, and hence the pattern started at
003-000 will play for 32 steps (2 bars)

I'll then un-mute the the channel on the RS7000 at 004-240 and it will
go back to normal.

Q: Can I do this mutliple time? With different MD patterns?

A: Of course, try this:

001-000 E -1 (Play Pattern A 01, 16 steps)
002-000 F# -1 (Play Pattern A 04, 08 steps)
002-240 F -1 (Play Pattern A 04, 16 steps)
003-000 G -1 (Play Pattern A 04, 32 steps)

Note: Bear in mind that where I've shown xx steps above, it's based on
how many steps will play on the MD; NOT necessarily the length of the
actual pattern.

---------

Side-Note; just re-read your post, and maybe got a bit sidetracked
there :)

Q: Can you switch patterns "live" whilst in play mode?

A: Easy.

Select Pattern A01
Press Play
Select Pattern A12 (It will switch at the end of the bar)

-----------

Quote: the real beauty on the rm1x is that you dont even have to wait

Reply: I'll be honest and say that I'm not sure on this one....

(I have my RS7000 section change quantization set to bar; I know what
your talking about, and it goes down to 1/16th, but I never use it..
I'm driving too many cc's and sysex that it would be a pain... plus it
can really sound shite live...)

In fact I don't think it is possible when in "Pattern" mode.

In "Song" mode, yes it is. (Kind of)

You define which pattern plays when, at what step they start and
finish, how many times they repeat, which "tracks" are muted etc
(you can also insert tempo changes as well)

01 Play Pattern A 01 Start at Step 01 - Finish at Step 16 - Repeat x4
02 Play Pattern B 12 Start at Step 01 - Finish at Step 16 - Repeat x2
03 Play Pattern H 07 Start at Step 09 - Finish at Step 11 - Repeat x6
04 Play Pattern E 09 Start at Step 32 - Finish at Step 32 - Repeat x20
05 Play Pattern C 15 Start at Step 05 - Finish at Step 27 - Repeat x4

Make sense?

Note: I've written entire tracks based on one 16 step pattern and some
clever use of start / finish offsets, tempo changes and repeats.

-----------

Quote: also, patterns on it are arranged from a to p horizontally
across the bottom of the keyboard. on the MnM how do you switch
patterns? is it via the keyboard itself?

Reply: This is for the MachinDrum.....

On the left side of the unit are 4 buttons for banks "A to D" or "E to
H"; (Labled: A/E, B/F, C/G, D/H)

There is also a "Bank Select" button that toggles between which is
active, "A to D" or "E to H"

(If you can look at a picture of it you will see what I mean....)

So; the MachineDrum is playing... (Lets say Pattern A01)

And I want to switch to Pattern A15:

I press and hold button "A/E" and press the "15" button. (along the
bottom / the actual grid entry / drum trigger)

Now I want to switch to Pattern D06:

I press and hold button "D/H" and press the "06" button.

Now I want to switch to Pattern G09:

I press the "Bank Select" button to go from banks "A to D" to "E to H"

I press and hold button "C/G" and press the "09" button.

-----------

I hope that helps?

Rusty

Wow, this is great stuff. Would you mind if I used this on an upcoming
website as a MD/RS7k tutorial?

Scott,

I'd be happy to write it up / doll it up; maybe get some pictures into
it as well if you want?

What's the site?
