Hi Group /new with a problem/Please help

2005-01-18 by Chris

HI,

I am new here and the proud owner of a Machine Drum and a Mono Machine SFX.
I am beginning to work very hard on my new material right now and am having a problem.
There is a high pitch tone coming through the outputs of both machines at a low level, but
enough to be recorded and annoying.
It does not sound like grounding, it sounds to me like digital sync noise.

On Machine Drum there seems to be 2 tones coming at once.
One is around 1k and the other is around 8k.(I tried filtering and found that.

After recording just the noise and normalizing it (wouldn't recommend listening to that!)
it is a horrifying cluster.

This tone comes from all outputs except from headphone.

I am plugging directly into the audio interface and bypassing my board.
I do that with my Virus as well and there is no problem.
Itried bringing the outputs into the board to test that and it is still there.

I am using Logic as the masterclock and then using internal sequencing on Machine Drum
and Mono Machine.

Does anyone have a clue what this is? It is making both of these great machines unusable.

Please help

Thank you,
Chris

Congrats on your new gear. I just got my Mono Machine, and have had my
Machine Drum for some time. Awesome gear as you well know. So lets see ...

Did you get the units new? Can you hear that nasy noise if you were to
plug your headphones into the output A/mono of the units? Or are you
stating that you hear it when you hook up the units to your mixer?

I have abridged your original message because this line hit me.
Some machines such as the B2, some snares, and the ones with the
ramp may produce different tones on the MD. I'm especially thinking
of the B2 here since it makes such a low noise you can't hear it all
the time.

My answer is to check each machine you are using in the MD pattern.
Use the mute function to solo each one and see if one of the
machines is doing this, tweak the parameters of the soloed machine
to find what may be causing it.

This is a guess. I hope I'm right about your problem. This is one
of the great things about the nature of the beast. So many unkowns.

I have found a solution to get rid of the noise.
It appears to be some "grounding-? noise" that is made
when the metal on the MD makes contact with the metal
in a rack and only when the Mono synth is in the rack
as well. ( I only had those 2 machines in that rack) I
do not understand this. It is unlike any grounding
noise that I ever knew existed. To solve the problem,
I put both units in the rack with nylon screws and
washers with also electrical tape across the metal
rack to break any contact between the machines and the
metal. They are both super quiet now and behaving
quite nicely!
If anyne understands this high pitch sound and why
this happened, please let me know.

Chris

Glad to hear that you have found a fix to your problem, and that now
you can play with your new gear. Enjoy!

If you have the time you might want to unrack all your gear. Install
the MD test... install the MnM test... install the virus and
test...etc.. till you find which the problem. I wonder if you
instelled just the MD, and MnM if the problem would exist. Best of luck.
