How to create a track?!

How to create a track?!

2005-03-29 by finite_sf

I love my MnM and MD to death, and want to use the MnM as my main
sequencer. I have created a bunch of original patches on my MD, MnM,
Pulse+, K5000s, Pro-One... and find that I dont have to reference as
often.

I have created a bunch of sequences on my MnM, and my MD, as well as
kits. I have even been able to sequence my external gear via my MnM. I
love to go threw my patches, and play with pulling out puting in a
track... etc.. with the joystick...

My problem is how to I progress the track... intro, etc... is there a
format that I should stick to? Whats the trick? LOL

I know how to get a good grove going with the MD, as well as the MnM.
My goal is to play live with the MnM, MD, and what ever gear I feel
like taking out.

Could you all give me some tips?!

Thanks in advance.

go to the record store and listen to lots of vinyl on the
headphones. buy some vinyl and copy the format used by experienced
producers. that's what they do. sometimes you'll go through a really
complicated process to come up with something simple. if you don't
know where to start go get some depeche mode remixes or something...

i hope this helps.. from damien

Just a lot of practise, you'll have to learn to play with these
sequencers like real instruments. My tip for Live is not to bring to
much gear. You might lose track after some time with all those
patterns and knobs and that can be really $%@##%^#. (I know :-(

For now maybe you can do as me when working in the studio:
Just play around with some patterns on MM and MD and record it. After
that cut it into logical (Usable) pieces in Cubase, Logic, Ableton,
etc.. And play with it rearranging again in a larger fashion and throw
some vst's over it for accents, ambience, fx and maybe some extra
beats. You'll get very organic tracks this way and practise Live
sequencing at the same time.

Ronald.

LOL I got mad vinal man... and I do try to reproduce what I like. The
thing is I want to understand the process that the pros use to crank
out a track.

I can get a grove going no problem... I just need to compleate one of
 my groves into a track.

There is no real standard process, people just use what works best for them.
For me, I always start everything in hardware, get a sequence going, get
some variations going on, try to figure out some basic arrangement on the
hardware sequencer I'm using, usually the MnM(a godsend), using mutes the
joystick and pattern switching. Then record all the loops of each part into
Logic, and work from there. More advanced arrangement, editing, adding parts
on the fly from my gear, usually via midi before recording in, but sometimes
just playing the audio in. Work on mixing, effects, getting the sound where
I want it etc..

Here's typically about a nights work for a track, the other night in fact.
My stuff always starts as sketches like this.

P.S. Mostly MnM and SH-101 :)

That's a heck of a good night's work! It would be really helpful if you
could let us "follow along" as you develop this track. Maybe each time
you do any significant further work on it you could update this file and
post something describing what you did.

Andy,

Is this track recorded mostly straight from the hardware, or did you
assemble it in Logic?

Thanks, Ok, sounds like a good idea.

Well the first section was created and mock arranged on the MnM, including
the drums via midi. Then I recorded all the individual 4 bar loops for each
part, and assembled them on their respective tracks in logic basically
replicating what I came up with on the MnM. The second section was all
improv in logic because I can't sequence the 101 right now, so I just played
parts in live and edited and arranged them in logic.

I find this works the best for me, get the inspiration from sequencing
outside of the computer, and then getting it all in logic multitracked so I
have the freedom to get the mix I want and edit stuff visually.

When you print MnM sound to Logic, do you kill the delay? When I
record MnM loops into Live, I run them in dry, and add FX in the
software. I guess this means that some of the cool delay/param lock
tricks you can do on the MnM won't make it into loop form.

Re: [elektron] Re: How to create a track?!

I usually keep the delay, when I record the loop I hit stop on the MnM right
at the end of the loop and keep logic recording so I keep the tail. I don't
always use it, sometimes a loop sounds ok if one cuts off where the next
begins, but I always have the tail in case I need to end a section and want
it to hang over. But if it's an important delay sometimes I just use two
tracks for one part and alternate the loops on each track so the tail hangs
over and I can keep track of everything.
