my c=64 wants to be a sid station

my c=64 wants to be a sid station

2005-07-17 by jedihendrix

Hello all -

I am not an elektron user as of yet, but i know some (i bet they are here on this list too).

I have a c=64 that i have used to make music since my dad bought it in the 80s. It has been
harassing me lately about converting to a sid station. I remember a few years ago reading
that you could send in your existing sid chip and have a station built with it. I couldn't find
any reference to that on the site now. I have emailed elektron and i'm still waiting to here
back. Anybody know anything about this?

I've never heard of this being an option. in fact, i've heard quite
the opposite.
I believe that Elektron has a FAQ on their Sidstation site (or
perhaps its under
the info section) where they specifically state that they know you
can get a
Sid chip used, but they didn't want to go that route and will only
use new
Sid chips (thus the reason for selling 100 more Sidstations once they
came
across 100 more new chips).

you can go to ucapps.de and look at the Sid synth there though. it's
a DIY
option to build your own Sid synth. not exactly a Sidstation, but at
least you're
using a Sid chip!  :-)

I'm about finished a MIDIbox SID for my modular synth. It is really
wonderful -
I can route the 6 LFO's out to modulate other filters, and use other
modulation sources to tweak the SID. That, and it is multitimbral to boot!
I was too cheap to drop $900 on a Sid-station: this project is under $200.

You can try here for an alternative : http://www.hardsid.com/

Great. Thanks for all your input.
I am looking at this as the best option so far -

Unless elektron decides they want to sell me a sidstation shell for my own chip.

You can actually access ALL parameters via midi CC. Which means that you could easily patch your own control surface in say Reaktor or Clavia G2 (as I have done) if you don't build the full control surface(step C). Step A (with minimal knobs and display) works great in itself - even better if you hook it up to a midi controller or computer editor!

Cheers,
Mikael

Which control surface do you use and do you have any templates. And
while I'm asking, Anyone have any Edirol PCR controller templates? :)

I use my Clavia G2 to program my MidiBox SID. But I guess a template could be made for the Behringer BCR2000 - you really want plenty of knobs since the MidiBox SID uses almost all 128 midi CCs. Otherwise a computer editor (like the JSynth Editor referenced at ucapps.de) work quite nice.

Cheers,
Mikael

Move to quarantaine
