Hey guys, Do any of you have some dollar amounts it cost to ship your MD from the US to Sweden? Just getting my MD together to say goodbye for a few weeks. chrism

One other question to add to this - elektron says to have the "value of merchandise" down as $50 for repair of broken electronics. Can I still insure the bugger for $1600? Sure, the "repair" is worth $50, give or take an order of magnitude, but I'm not too comfortable sending it without insurance - UPS has broken keyboards on me before. -gerald On 8/26/05, Chris Mitchell <chrism@...> wrote: > > Hey guys, > > Do any of you have some dollar amounts it cost to ship your MD from > the US to Sweden? Does anyone know how hard this upgrade actually is? I am a fairly experienced electrical engineer and wanted to see if I could talk Elektron into sending me the dam parts... So for a U/W upgrade you ship to Sweden?

I believe that the return shipping is included. I was a bit irked to see that I have to pay to ship it to Sweden, especially since I had planned on trying to have them let me drive my MD down to LA and drop it off (I'm about 1.5 hrs north). But then again, I'm not sure I want any but the finest Swedish hands touching my MD, and I guess that will have to be the case. -gerald On 8/26/05, Jesse <jesse@...> wrote: > > Shipping is included in the upgrade price, no? > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

...if you have never been inside a Machinedrum it's probably worth doing us doing the job. It's about digging down to the deepest layer and build it up again. The Machinedrum is filled with tons of screws and layers of circuit boards with different connectors which you need to know/remember where to put it. Also, the encoders might break when twisting the plastic off, and switching encoders is a big job. It takes some experience to dig inside it, but the modular layout is also what allows us to offer upgrades. We're taking a bunch in the US directly to Sweden while we work out the US service in order to keep the waiting time down. Note that it was quick and within the limits we set for the majority of the customers that bought the friend upgrade offer. Some people had to wait for too long though and we want to be in control to get these we offer now at full price out in time. The full price also allows us the extra budget for the return shipping for more units world wide. ...if you are keen on doing your service locally in the US, you could try contacting support with your request. If you live in LA I could understand the incentive for dropping it of and pick it up later. About insurance for sending them out, if you don't have the original customs papers that came with the unit, be sure to state the value low or it will be smashed with a large import fee that could almost double the upgrade price. If you make sure the unit is packed well there is no reason to believe that there is something going so bad we can't fix it. After all, it's going in for service. The only problem would be "lost in transit", but we have never had a return been lost so far, so I wouldn't be nervous about it. Use something trackable, set the import value low (or refer to the original import papers if bought directly from us), follow the instructions, follow your Machinedrum travelling around the world, returning in a new and improved form! I had no idea it would be $150 to ship it... ouch... Somehow, after missing the $400 friend upgrade, and shelling out $650 total for it, I am feeling like the _biggest_ chump in the world. I hope this feeling dissapates when I get the MD back... and I hope my wife will speak to me again soon. Her response was not mild to say the least. -gerald On 8/26/05, Chris Mitchell <chrism@...> wrote: > > i did, and it was not cheap :( if i had known they were going to > advise us to ship to sweden, i may have waited until the next round.. > on the other hand, i hope it goes MUCH faster than 6 weeks + some of > these guys are reporting. > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

well, i felt pretty lame... i didn't have the $400 during the friend offer, so i jumped on this not expecting an additional $1250 over what i thought insured domestic shipping would cost. but standing there with the MD in my hand with the shipper i was like, hrm, what do i do at this point? i can't exactly call elektron and ask for their advice. i guess i could have gone home, but meanwhile $500 would be missing to no purpose. the consolations are this 1) it will likely be done much faster, and by the people who designed the box... i hope and expect that they will go over the thing with a fine toothed comb and not send it back with any possible thing going wrong with it anytime soon... and 2) they're paying shipping back, though i do not know their cost on that. so likely a good portion of that extra non-friend price covers the return shipment. now for what i picked up the MD used last year, plus this, i could haved just (almost) bought a new UW under warranty.. :/ such is the life of the gear luster. i'm glad to hear it cost you the same, not that i wanted it to cost so much but just so i know it was a good average price. so, buyers beware, if you are going to ship to sweden expect a total cost of around $650 for the upgrade... in any case, better than having one MD and spending 1650 for a UW. though having two MDs would not hurt would it :D

When you put it that way, Chris, I really am the biggest schmuck in the world - I just paid $1100(original) +$650 (upgrade) = $1750 for a UW. I will soon own the most expensive UW ever made. -gerald On 8/27/05, Chris Mitchell <chrism@...> wrote: > > > so, buyers beware, if you are going to ship to sweden expect a total > cost of around $650 for the upgrade... in any case, better than > having one MD and spending 1650 for a UW. though having two MDs > would not hurt would it :D > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You shouldn't need to pay $150 to ship it to Sweden! Choose any shipping company you like, you should be able to get it down to like $50 in my opinion by shopping around. I'm no expert on shipping internationally from the US, but $150 sounds excessive to me... At the company that I ship from (and i've sent many, many pieces of gear through them) they weigh and measure , then show a grid on the screen of the costs for each of the shipping companies (FedEx, USPS, UPS, DHL, Airborne Express)... There was nothing even close to $50. The US Postal service would mail it there in 3+ weeks, without tracking, for about $80. Being as we are not able to fully insure the gear due to customs fees, sending anything internationally without tracking would be insane. $50 is simply not possible. I would not have even mentioned the shipping cost if it had not been $150 (on Airborne Express) and UPS, etc were even more expensive. chrism

I think overnight was just under $50.

OK, thanks for the reality check. We have a good deal on shipping stuff _out_ in the world. But getting stuff in is expensive. Looks like its similar to what you needed to pay to get your stuff here. It's obvious we need to resolve the US service issue. Anyone who happen to have any tip on west or east-coast techs that have resources free to take on new assignments, feel free to send them to info@elektron You US people who had to pay the excessive shipping fees this time, let us know (support@elektron) if there is anything we can do for you while we have the unit in our hands. I'm sincerely sorry about the high shipping cost you needed to pay. At least I promise we will give them the highest priority and attention.
