Questions on MachineDrum purchase... Any Australian Users??

Questions on MachineDrum purchase... Any Australian Users??

2003-10-25 by crvenazvezda91

Hi,

Wanted to get some information on the MachineDrum as am probably
planning on getting one very shortly.

From what I've seen the majority of people seem very happy with it,
minus the occasional horror stories.

All the reviews I've read certainly speak highly of it.

And my (1) personal experince with it certainly stood it in good
stead. That was at the Frankfurt Musikmesse earlier this year and I
left wanting 3 bits of kit; the MachineDrum being one of them.

So, the questions: (btw: I live in Australia)

1) Can someone explain to me what is the deal with the shipping? As I
understand it is all sent via Fed-Ex courier service. Has anybody
been hit up for extra fees by Fed-Ex when they deliver? Don't want to
have the MD delivered and have to fork out extra fees before I even
get it.

2) Has anybody had any experience with the Australian customs? You
only need to pay 10% GST right? Or is there additional fees on top
charged by customs?

Obviously, I'm concerned about getting the MD; $1,100 US is a good
wack of money at the best of times, it's even a bigger hit over here
in Australia, so I want to make sure everything is covered.

Basically want to know what I'm getting myself into, and what the
absolute TOTAL cost will be for me.

MachineDrum + any courier fees + any custom fees + ??? = ???

Thanks,
Rusty

I think they've moved to UPS exclusively now. and the price includes all
shipping fees (they ship international priority, which is really fast).
and you will be charged no shipping fees when it arrives. however (see
below)...

yes. at least here in the US, Elektron customers get the privelege of
paying the customs fee when their toys arrive. I'm not sure how UPS does
it, but Fed-Ex will pay it for you, then send you a bill (plus a $5
"convenience charge" for paying your bill up front). I think UPS is the
same.

if you will have to pay customs, Elektron will notify you of this during
the online ordering process. they calculate what you should expect to pay
given the current currency exchange, etc. so you'll see the estimated
charges before you place your order.

agreed. but it's well worth it :-)

sorry I can't give you Australia specifics. but if you go through the
order process, doing everything up until the final step (the point of no
return), you should see the estimate I mentioned.

Hey Rusty,

I live in Melbourne and just recently bought a beta Monomachine.

In short, all shipping is covered by the $1100; howeve UPS charged me a $50 customs
brokerage fee, as well as 10% GST.

Regarding the GST, I could be totally wrong but I had the impression they only bothered
if the item was valued above $2000AU including postage (MD is about $1600AU now) so
you may escape having to pay GST.

However, I should explain that I personally suffered an absolute horror story with UPS; I
ordered the Mono on Thursday (I think) and it arrived at UPS Melbourne on Monday
morning... sans invoice (according to tracking page). 2 days later, they call me and let
me know this ("No, we can't look inside the box for an invoice") so I faxed them a copy of
the checkout invoice from monomachine.com. 2 days later, they are ready to release the
package to me, and call to ask for... $350. I am dubious and that GST looks too high.
Turns out they want to charge me GST on what I paid for the Mono (which included
shipping) as well as GST on $500 or so of UPS shipping. After much speaking to
managers etc, it became apparent that to prove that shipping was included in the $1400
paid for the Mono would take weeks. Remember, this is all because the invoice wasn't on
the package...

Finally, I admit defeat, pay the $350 and drive to UPS's warehouse on the other side of
Melbourne ("It'll be at least Monday before we can courier it out to you...") and pick up
my beautiful, glorious Mono... including the original Sweden invoice, signed by elektron,
in triplicate, taped to the outside of the box (including proof that the shipping was
already taxed).

This is of course a blatant breach of their Worldwide Express Guarantee (what you are
paying 3-400 of your MD price for); which can only be refunded to the shipper. So I am
now in contact with Elektron (havn't heard anything for 3 weeks) trying to get them to
get the refund from UPS and split it with me on a MD.

BUT! Assuming my UPS experience was a one-off freak accident, you should recieve the
MD within 5 days and pay $50-$200 extra. The good news is, the Mono is good enough
for me to want an MD as well, so it certainly is worth it.

Hope that helped somewhat.

Angus.

Holy shite! I ordered the MD and it is being shipped
to me here in the US. I knew about the extra $50 but I
hope to hell that I don't have to pay another $200 or
$300 to get my MD. If I would have known about this I
might not have bought the MD. Can anyone ease my mind
from this?

Hey Auto,

easing your mind:

#1 That 200-300 dollars is Australian money which is like peanuts to you
(1US=1.5AU).
#2 I don't think you guys have a Goods Tax like ours (blanket 10% tax on all goods
and services sold in Aus)

So you should be fine...

Angus.

hey, I live in Perth, and got my MD a couple of months ago, so
hopefully I can answer your questions for you.

As far as I remember, FedEx didn't charge me extra. They may have,
but it would have only been a very small amount, nothing too much to
worry about - definately less than $AU 100.

I only had to pay the 10%, nothing more.

You're luckier than I was. I got my MD when the exchange rate was
about $US 0.62 ish, now its almost $US 0.70 , so you're getting a
better deal than I did, :). It is a lot of money to spend on one bit
of gear, but I'm sure you'll be glad you did spend it!! Good luck
with it.

Re: Questions on MachineDrum purchase... Any Australian Users??

I live in Canada and had to pay some $270 when my machinedrum
arrived. It was brutal and unexpected, especially since I contacted
customs prior to ordering and they said it wouldn't be that much.
Just be careful, but it's a terrific machine.

cheers

Hi,

Thanks for the answers, most apprecitated.

I realise I'm probably going to have to fork out an extra 10% for GST
when it gets here....

The big question is will I have to fork out extra money to the
courier service for any charges???

Certainly as you said, if the courier charged you an extra $100 (One
Hundred Dollars) I might be thinking twice about getting it...

Unfortunatly $100 is too much for me to not worry about.... I do hope
thats a typo and you really only meant ten dollers.

Thanks,
Rusty

As I understand it is all sent via Fed-Ex courier service. Has
anybody been hit up for extra fees by Fed-Ex when they deliver? Don't
want to have the MD delivered and have to fork out extra fees before
I even get it.

>>> As far as I remember, FedEx didn't charge me extra. They may
have, but it would have only been a very small amount, nothing too
much to worry about - definately less than $AU 100.

Well, I'll say it again...

Thanks to all the people who responded to my post and gave me some
info on the MachineDrum and particularly the shipping and tax part....

As of 2 minutes ago, I've just ordered my MachineDrum :)

So should be here by the weekend... looking forward to it :)

Hmmm, better stock up on coffee and cigarettes... its going to be a
long, long weekend....

Thanks,
Rusty
