Emax II problems booting disk

2003-09-10 by Jarremix

Ok looking for help on here...

I received a EMAX II in pretty bad condition, I have wanted one
scince I saw Depeche Mode using them. I opened and cleaned unit.
Took out plastic toy in unit.

Anyway heres the problem. I put one of my Emax Disks in and it tells
me not Emax II disk. the LCD is off center on unit. The power unit
on the floppy drive stays lit. I hooked a CD300 to it set SCSI to 6
but beause it wont read disk nothing boots. It seems without going
reading the floppy I have a beautifully cleaned (3 hours) Emax II
that i can only look at.

New foppy drive, internal drive external SCSI drive.

I swaped the drive from my Emax and no response on that. Same
problems. I am open to any or all suggestions.

What do I have to do to get unit to boot/ work make a simple sound?
or should I lay it to rest and seek another Unit.

Thanks

Fergal

Hi Jarremix

I also got the interest of Emax's because of DM.

It seems like you have had some bad luck buying this Emax II which apparently have been used for other things than music production (toys and stuff inside). Have you bought it from an auction like Ebay?

The floppy drive on the Emax is allways lit no matter if the drive is used or not. It's function must be a kind of power indicator and not to tell that the drive is busy.

If your floppy discs are not Emax II you cannot boot her up. Emax I discs will not boot her. Neither will you be able to boot her up using a cd-rom. You need a Emax II floppy disc or a harddrive with the Emax II software on it.

Try also to upen her up and check that all connectors (also check the connectors to the floppydrive) are in place by pushing them into the sockets. Do the same with all the chips - gently.

I got an Emax II from an auction that wouldn't boot up. After I dissasembled her (took out all of the boards cleaning it) and pushing all connectors and chips into the sockets she got okay.

Does all the lights for the submodules light up as well?

Let's know how it goes for you.

Best regards

Brian - a Depeche mode addict

Not on mine, it's not. Mine lights when the drive is being accessed
only. If the LED is on all the time, it could mean that the drive is
faulty, or that the cable has been fitted upside down. This would also
make it spin continuously. Pin 1 is usually marked on the PCB, and on
disk drives is usually on the end of the big connector nearest the power
connector. If the machine has been opened before, it's possible that
the connector has been reversed. To get the Emax II rack apart, the
floppy cable needs to be disconnected because it's a little short (at
least on mine).

Hi Gordon

Are you sure that your floppydrive is original?

Both my Emax I and Emax II (keyboard versions) floppy drives are
illuminated with a red light from power up untill power off no matter
if I access the drive or not.

The drives only spin up when I insert a floppy in it or if I access
the drive and they work without problems.

My floppy drives are the original ones.

Best regards

Brian

Thanks to those who have responded already.

I usually dont post in here cause the information is always so good
in the "archives". I would answer questions but i will leave that to
the experts -of which there are many- as i try to learn.

I Swapped the floppy from my Emax1 and that didn't help so that
means that its not just the floppy drive right?

I purchased on ebay and the description was "perfect working
condition" . I have emailed the seller to let him know that I am
upset. I had the opportunity to buy a 500 meg rack instead and
passed, so bad decision on my part.

So I have my shoping list a harddrive Conner 540, maybe a new teac
floppy can I install one without custom mount , an external zip for
back-ups. A new LCD. and Sample disks.

Are there any chips etc I should be checking and how in the world
would i check them to make sure they are working.

Anyone who can help me out on any or all of tha above i would
appreciate it.

Thanks again

Fergal

RE: [emax] Emax II problems booting disk

2003-09-10 by Rob Keeble

Hi,
1) Do you have an Emax II diskette, or does "Emax Disks" mean Emax I? You'll
never boot an Emax II from an Emax I diskette - wrong OS.
2) Check the orientation of the floppy drive cable - e.g. where the red
stripe is. It should be on Pin 1 on the board and drive. Wrong way round and
the LED comes on all the time....
3) A new LCD won't be aligned any better - it plus into the same sockets -
try and realign the old one.

Ok I dont have any EMAX II OS floppy disks. I have a bunch of Emax I
disks so that could be a problem first of all.

I tried the format with EMX program with 2DD and 2HD disks but wont
format.

If there is anyone who could send floppies EMX II formatted or any
further information I would compensate financially for any costs
incurred.

If to get at the LCD is not an easy task I assume so any help there
would be appreciated.

One final Comment is that you guys are awesome and I hope to able
help some new people as much as you have already helped me. I feel
my sanity slowly coming back to me.

Thank You

Re: [emax] Re: Emax II problems booting disk

2003-09-11 by capricorn

i also recently purchased an emaxII 8 meg turbo HD rack on ebay ...
listed as perfect but was much less than .. it was from puerto rico
and wasn't well taken care of but it works.....

the back side has a broken jackbut it stil works,
it was all rusted on the back side like it had sat face up in a puddle in
storage,
and had a rack ear missing ... and the volume knob was also missing ..
BUT.... it booted up on the third try from the HD
and has worked ever since .. i guess it sat for a long long time with out
being used ....
so for less than $200 i guess i can't complain to badly.

If you have an older PC, a blank 800k floppy, and about a half hour you can create an EmaxII boot floppy by going to the files section and down load the files in the folder "CopyQm & ZD777 image Emax II 2.14" Folloe the directions closely as it will require you to exit to the DOS prompt and work from there. I believe that it has got a few people up and running. Obviously it won't help if the floppy drive is bad or support controller chip.
Good luck,
Skip
