New member - Initial EMAX Q? + advice

2003-12-30 by Luke Fowler

Hello There

I am new to the list and have just purchased a EMAX 1 keyboard s/h - I
believe it to be the standard Keyboard model as it only has 524288 k when
empty and runs Software Rev 3.2. I haved looked extensively through the
archives and there are still a few queries that I need answered regarding my
Emax 1.

I am pessimistic but here goes!!!

1) Has anyone outthere found ANY Way at all to expand the sample memory of
my emax 1 - either with chips or a new Hard drive?

2) I use Win 2000 and a PC, What is the METHOD to get Samples from PC floppy
onto the EMAX floppies. Someone mentioned soundforge ? Does the EMX
translator only work with Win 98??

3) If I do get Soundforge sample dump working - is it generally better
practice to sample directly into the Emax or to go into the computer and
then save the files as 16bit before dumping onto Emax?

4)what can I use the Emax 1's 9 pin "computer interface" port for these
days - Zip drive? An external hard drive?

I also have some advice to offer for other S/H emax buyers I bought my Emax
not working - the symptoms it displayed were randomizing samples and spewing
out noise (cool if yr into Whitehouse/Merzbow) I took it to my local repair
shop and they said that it was a problew with the power supply not getting
enough power to the memory - it cost \ufffd30 fix! So quite a positive story
because now I have a fully working lovely Emax 1 - the only frustrating
thing is the limitation to 512 K even 1mb sample time would be better!! But
this is what I will have to make do with and I love the analog filters.

Thanks a lot

Luke

Nope there isn't a way it's all proprietary. Unless your model already had a hard drive
(which you could then modify it to support an external Zip drive).

EMX is not a translator. It's a disk imager. It simply extracts/write the sectors on the
diskettes that have bank information or OS information. It does not know what it is
copying. To run correctly it requires you be in DOS 6.1 or earlier. With Windows 9.x a
reboot into DOS mode will allow you to work with bank data only, to work with OS data
you need to be in actual DOS 6.1 or earlier.

For the best quality samples you need to do what professional sample creators do, you
need good preamps, compressor/limiters, and eq. Sampling into something like Sound
Forge is easier IMHO because you can graphically work with the samples, you can
Normalize them, use effects, and overall work on samples in a way the Emax absolutely
can not do, plus the enviroment is a much more efficient method than going through all
the menus on the Emax's tiny screen.

It is for use with a older Macs running old copies of the Alchemy software. The only
computer editor to actually have a true Emax module built in.

When it came time for expandable memory they introduced the Emax II, of course
though you get some of the best sounding digital filters out there, they are not the same
as the ones on the Emax. Of course, to me, the best use of those filters are analog and
drum type samples for which 512k is enough memory.

Dear Luke,
In absense of sample memory expansion chips, upgrades, etc. I have found that if you go through EACH sample and truncate (get rid of) unwanted or unuseful material, you gain back a good amount of memory. Also try re-sampling some of the sounds/samples at a lower rate. If they sound a little bit "hissy" try filtering the sound in the output filters. I've had much success using the time varient amp filter in inverse mode, acting as a "noise gate" so that when the sound decays, so does the hiss. I have also sampled in "Stereo" on the EMAX I using the threshold start feature and feeding each channel seperately (in multi sample mode) then panning each sample hard left and right. I then check for sample start in truncate mode to correct any possible pahse shift problems.Always try using a lower sample rate and fine adjust the filters for getting rid of the "grunge".....Good luck and Have fun!

emax1 eh? I have one too ,and let me say, those things
are 20+ year old technology - 512k was considered a good amount
of memory in the mid-80s -your lucky that emax even works!

my emax needs the power supply replaced, anyone know where I can get
one REALLY cheap? otherwise Ill have to get one from EPC inc. for $80

use EMX and soundforge for editing and record your emax to something
like logic audio for use in your songs, then you can just keep
piling on emax tracks, because its being multitracked to your PC ( or
mac )

Hallo there

re: Nope there isn't a way it's all proprietary. Unless your model already

How would I know if my model had a Hard drive in the past?
Other than that...
Thanks very much for yr advice. The Emax is ofcourse is not my only sampling
tool - I have a PC and a Delta - so I am in no shortage of hard disk
sampling space, the emax is great at what it does - which is for throwing up
ideas with the filters and arpeggiator. It throws up results which fondly
reminds me of some of the Emulator work on 80's Residents LPs and for that I
am thankful. Also a nice tool for playing live and jamming with other
musicians. I would like to hear how the digital filters compare on the EMAX
2 maybe one day I find one of them cheap too? For now, so long,
long live digital/analog sampling!
Best
luke

Hi,
1) Emax memory cannot be expanded, but you can add a hard disk or ZIP100 if
you have a model with internal or external SCSI connections (e.g HD models).
2) Sample transfer programs were created for Mac users in the late 80's, and
you should use one of these. Chickensys are working on Emax sample
translation on the PC.
3) Sampling into a modern PC sound card will be way better than using the
Emaxs's sample input. Even after sample bit rate conversion.
4) This is the RS422 port. E-mu initially planned to use this as their
"MIDI" standard, but had to go with Dave Smiths slower standard. E-mu did
implement sample transfer via this port and it runs much faster than MIDI so
it makes sample editing practical. MIDI sample transfer is slow.

Track down an old Mac with a Nubus slot. Get a Digidesign Audiomedia II card
from ebay. Get Sound Designer II Version 2.5 (I can send one for free). Put
this together with your Emax and a serial cable and you have a sample
editing system that is fast and flexible. SD II will read WAV files from PC
floppies and transfer them to the Emax fast. SD II uses the Audiomedia card
as a dongle. The card has digital and analog I/O. SD II is a great sample
editor too.

Rob
