emax floppy drive replacement?

emax floppy drive replacement?

2004-10-03 by Brian Broadt

Anyone know of or can point me to any info on replacing an emax floppy
drive with a more readily available pc type drive? Is there an issue
with the 0/1 drive id with 1 being default on new drives because of the
PC floppy cable twist switching the device id or do I need a 720k
drive? Better yet, anybody got a source for a replacement floppy drive
other than a dead emax? Thanks in advance!

stupid simple question ;)

2004-10-05 by Micke Askernäs

Hello list!

I have a (probably very simple) question..

I have a while ago been given 2 non-working emaxes, both with fried power
supplies and one with fried floppy drive..

One of these emaxes also came equipped with an internal hd, but as it is
closing in on 20 years old, I'm thinking of putting in an old scsi zip 100
drive into it instead and all that..

BUT ... my problem is: how do i transfer the os from the harddrive (or from
diskette) to the zipdrive that i was plannign on making internal?

Also, if i've read it correctly on emulatorarchive, all i really need to do
is take out the harddrive, and set my zipdrive as SCSI id 100 and it should
hopefully try to boot from the zipdrive instead..

BUT .. the emax doesnt support larger drives than 20 MB ... so ... i take it
i need to format the zipdisk into a format the emax can understand..

of course, to make matters harder, the old emaxes i was given had been given
a rather crude paint job, and this none of the old menu buttons are visible,
so i really have no idea what button does what at this point .. ;)

I am refurbishing the emaxes for live use with my band .. i'll post images
when the first one is ready ;)

in the mean time, i'd appreciate a little help .. also .. where can i change
what midi channel the emax is transmitting on?

thanks,

//Micke

Remember if you are not going to do the external Zip Mod you will need to make sure
the new power supply can handle the Zip, the original power supply can't.

When you run the format command from any bootable media (floppy or hard drive) it
automatically copies the OS as part of the process.

If you have the Zip set to the same ID as the hard drive then yes, it will try to boot from
the SCSI ID assigned to the hard drive first.

The only way to format a srive for Emax use is with the Emax itself, it has it's own
proprietary format scheme. It will ignore anything beyond the 20Mb it can format.

Download the manual in pdf format from wither my site or the Emulator Archive. It's not
as good as having the menu on the unit itself, but what can you do!

I can't quite remember it's been a long time, but it should be somewhere in the Master |
Special menu. Try pressing Master then using the slider to see the name of all the
menus, I think it might be Master | 0 (Special) | 2 Midi Master .. but hat could be wrong
too ..

Thanks for your answers, John...

However, one quick question:

How powerful is/was the original Emax power supplys?

since mine were fried, i managed to fit two 80W supplys i bought 12 years ago
and never used into the each of my emaxes, and it seems to have worked just
fine since then, and since it has basically the same specifications (a few
extra coords that i dont use, but othwerwise same Voltage and Ampere on the
outputs)..

hopefully, this 80W should be more than sufficient to run a zipdrive on,
escpeicllay when i remove both floppy and harddrive...

I can't answer that.. Rob at Emulator Archive has the lowdown on the actual internal
parts.

Hi
Agreed, it should be more than enough once the hard disk is out the way -
thats what eats up the current.
Remember Emax will only boot from floppy and SCSI ID 0, so set internal SCSI
to 0.

Regards
Rob
hopefully, this 80W should be more than sufficient to run a zipdrive on,

Hi.

I'm looking for a good piano sound for my Emax II. I need a sound with a
pretty long sustain, I have the 9ft grand right now but that one dies
too fast I think. If you have one, please contact me!

spare key and spring ...?

2004-10-06 by Micke Askernäs

Hello again ;)

While disassembling my emaxes it turned out that one of the keys (a D if i
remember correctly was cracked .. or rather .. broken right whrere the spring
is supposed to be attached.

I also lack the spring that makes the key stay in upright position..

Is there anyone on this list that has spare parts, or have any idea where I
can find a replacement key and spring?

I can always superglue they key back together, and it will hold for at least
a little while, but i still lack the spring that would make it
operational ... =(

Also, I am searching for the small backplate where the powercord is attached,
it was also missing on one of the machines, otherwise they both work after
switching power supplys ;)

the backplate is not that big a deal, I think i can manufacture something
that would work to have in its place, but an original part would not hurt ..
so again .. anyone with spare parts ? ;)

any hits would be greatly appreciated !

thanks.. I promise to post lots of pictures when both my emaxes are fixed up
and gotten their new paintjob and all ;)

So I guess no one know's if it's possible to adapt a $5 PC floppy drive
or an older PC style 720k floppy drive for the EMAX?

I actually managed to score a Miniscribe drive for the emax (the exact
model# needed which escapes me now) on ebay for $9.95!!!! We'll see how
long it lasts!! Also got a kinda beat up HD SE Rack with Zip mod and a
replacement LCD & Control panel board. FrankEnMAX here I come!

Re: emax floppy drive replacement?

2004-10-08 by djtbs1

IF you know what you are doing, almost any IBM compatible floppy can be
changed to work with the emax. I bought a black drive (don't remember
brand), and looked at the old drive, followed its circuitry, compared to new
drive and moved one or two surface-mount jumpers.

***FYI: I have worked as an electronics tech and have the equipment, and the
knowledge of what I am doing.

The drive did not fit directly in however. And a standard drive leaves a large
gap. I then had to fabricate a bracket. This took me a good couple of hours
cutting, drilling, measuring, etc. I have electronics tools. I don't have a
machine shop. If you really want your emax to work, and if the Route66 drive
is a straight plug in, correct size and all, do it....

thats just my opinion. I get paid about $20 an hour. By the time I finished, my
time was probably worth the cost of the Route66 drive.....if not more....

thanks,
Ted

Re: [emax] Re: emax floppy drive replacement?

So it does have to do mainly with drive ID assignment, I may even have
some old drives kicking around that had the switchable jumpers. I also
manage my family's PC repair shop which has been around since the late
'70s so I think we might have something around I might not even have to
solder. Was the drive you used a 1.44 drive?
